Dog Helps Sniff Out Peanuts For Allergic Girl
Nightly News reports that an 8-year-old girl named Riley has a Portuguese Water Dog that sniffs out peanuts for her. Riley is so allergic to peanuts that a "slight whiff can threaten her life." Riley's mother thought of the idea when watching a show about bomb sniffing dogs. Dog trainer Bill Whitstine was kind enough to donate his time to train a dog for Riley. Normally it would have cost $15,000. Sherry Mers and Whitstine have started a foundation called Angel Service Dogs that will raise money to help train other dogs for children with severe allergies.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation Sends Plush Dog Toys to Obama Children
Barack Obama has been receiving pet ideas from all over the world since he announced during his victory speech in Chicago last month that his daughters would be getting a puppy in the White House. Barack Obama said, "Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House." 10-year-old Maliah suffers from allergies and this has complicated the pet decision.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is using the dilemma to help educate people about allergies, pets and plush toys. They are donating 2 asthma and allergy friendly plush toy puppies manufactured by Kids Preferred, Inc. to the Obama children to help them with their wait. The stuffed toys sent this week -- a Jack Russell Terrier and a Yellow Labrador Retriever -- are examples of plush toys that have recently been tested and certified by AAFA to be more suitable for children with asthma and allergies. To be certified by the Foundation, plush toys are put through rigorous laboratory testing including a review of raw textiles, chemicals, dyes, stitching, stuffing and other materials. Testing also includes dust mite exposure measurements, washability and durability.
"Real dogs can cause serious problems for people with asthma and allergies," according to Bob Overholt, MD, a board certified allergist in Knoxville and host of the "Dr. Bob Show" on the AmericanLife TV Network. "When inhaled into the nose and lungs, dog dander can trigger sneezing, coughing, wheezing and other symptoms that make breathing difficult," says Overholt. "Regular
stuffed toys can cause problems as well, since they can harbor dust mites and harsh chemicals that trigger asthma and allergy symptoms."
The AAFA says there are technically no "allergen-free" pets but they do offer some suggestions to help minimize the impact of pet allergies.
- Keep pets out of the bedroom and off of beds at all times to minimize
dog dander accumulation.
- Separately wash human and dog bedding weekly in 130-degree hot water
to remove dust mites and dog dander.
- Wipe pets after being outdoors to remove loose pollen from their
coats.
- Don't allow dogs to play with the kids' plush toys.
The symbol on the graphic above next to the plush dog toys is a symbol from the AAFA that indicates whether an item has has been scientifically tested and proven to be more suitable for people with asthma and related allergic sensitivities. Product Review: New Febreze Fabric Refresher

We've already admitted our passion for Febreze Allergen Reducer: we go through the stuff by the gallon during ragweed season (we got hooked after we saw our veterinarian had a bottle in every exam room). But we recently tried out samples of the latest Febreze product: the new and improved Febreze Fabric Refresher: this one's for the air and for fabrics. The scents are light and not overwhelming: the "Nose" among us pronounced approval of the Lavender Vanilla and Comfort fragrance that we tried out.
The bottle has been improved so it doesn't drip and doesn't make that "quacking" noise. That noise never bothered us when we spritzed away, but apparently it drove some people crazy. The new Febreze is quiet and dripless. We have this vision in our heads of an entire team of lab-coated scientists madly spraying Febreze out of hundreds of different bottle prototypes while a computer analyzed each prototype for sound quality, leaking and other things that the Powers That Be at Febreze have declared undesirable.
We read an article in The New York Times about how modern industry has created products that didn't exist twenty years ago. Fabric refresher is one of those new products. And boy, are we glad they invented it. It makes us happy.

Allergy Shots Could Cure Allergies
Scientists in England say
that they can cure allergies with just four shots of serum, which take about a month to administer.
The vaccine works by dampening hayfever sufferer's usual response to grass pollen and encouraging a milder reaction.
Tests showed the new vaccine – called Pollinex Quattro – cut the symptoms of one in three patients by more than a quarter, and achieved an average reduction of 13 per cent.
In the largest study of its kind, researchers tested the injections on 1,028 patients in Europe, America and Canada, before the start of the hayfever season last year.
The team behind the vaccine, Allergy Therapeutics, based in Worthing, West Sussex, who are due to present their findings at the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology meeting in Barcelona next week, now plan to embark on further trials to test if its effects are permanent.
Professor Tony Frew, Professor of Allergy and Respiratory Medicine at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, who led the study in Britain, described the vaccine as a "breakthrough" for hayfever sufferers.
Patients in the study "showed significant and clinically meaningful improvement in their symptoms," he said.
Keith Carter, CEO of Allergy Technologies, said: "Because this is a vaccine it does not just reduce symptoms, like antihistamines do, it acts on the immune system to sort of redress its natural balance.
"To achieve that in four weeks, without the need for large numbers of injections, is also a massive benefit to patients, many of whom struggled with hayfever year after year.
"Although tests are still ongoing, we believe there is a strong possibility that the vaccine could have curative effects - that if we stop giving it to patients they will not return to the level of symptoms they saw before the injections."
The company plan to apply for a license for the vaccine early next year, and expect the process to take at least 12 months, meaning that it could be available for use by 2010.
All we have to say is Hallelujah! An end to allergies and all the related sneezing, itching eyes and the other symptoms that wreak havoc with our appearance -- and our mood.

A Washer/Dryer That Removes Allergens
Allergy season is upon us. Unfortunately, there have been no major medical breakthroughs on the allergy front, so we're stuck with the same old, same old this spring: antihistamines, nasal sprays, mountains of Puffs, vaporizers and the like. But we did see that one enterprising electronics company has created a washer dryer combo that claims to remove 95% of allergens: the SteamWasher and Dryer Combo with Allergiene Cycle by LG Electronics.
Just in time for allergy season, LG Electronics has introduced a washer/dryer combination that removes up to 95 percent of allergens. The product, called the LG SteamWasher and Dryer Combo with Allergiene Cycle, has a compact design that is meant to fit in closets.
The company had previously released appliances that had been certified as asthma-and-allergy friendly, but the new product is LG's first such product that is both a washer and dryer. The initiative, LG says, is meant to cater to the 70 percent of households affected by asthma or allergies in the U.S.
"Our new Allergiene steam combo extends this industry-first benefit to more consumers who need to reduce allergens in their washable fabrics in order to be better prepared this allergy season," the vice president of marketing for LG's U.S. appliances group, John Weinstock, said in a statement.
The product, with a white finish, is available now at a suggested retail price of $1,999.
It's an interesting idea. We're not sure about something that's both a washer and a dryer at the same time, but hey, why not? The $2,000 price tag is not cheap, though.

Shoplifters Eager for Claritin
Claritin, an allergy drug which was recently made available without a prescription, is so popular that it is being stolen from stores by shoplifters. CNN reports that one drugstore manager even complained that people had tried to leave with baskets full of Claritin. Most drugstores are now moving Claritin behind the counter or into locked displays.
