White Hen Pantry7-Eleven, Inc. has acquired New England Pantry, a company that operates 58 convenience stores under the White Hen Pantry brand. The acquisition significantly expands 7-Eleven's presence in the greater Boston area, bringing the number of outlets 7-Eleven operates and franchises to over 170.

"This acquisition significantly strengthens our convenience offering in greater Boston," said Bob Cozens, vice president for 7-Eleven's Northeast Division. "White Hen Pantry has a 40-year history of providing good customer service and high-quality products to consumers in the Boston area and we want to continue that tradition."

The stores operating under the White Hen Pantry brand will begin converting to 7-Eleven stores in 2010.

7-Eleven Plans 550 New Stores Nationwide

7 Eleven StoreChain Store Age reports that 7-Eleven plans to add 550 stores nationwide and 4,000 stores worldwide over the next three years.
The chain will add 550 stores nationwide and about 4,000 worldwide during the same period, CEO Joe DePinto said in the report.

"We've really positioned ourselves for this," DePinto told the newspaper. "We have a strong balance sheet, real estate values are down and a lot of other retailers aren't growing right now, so there's a lot of real estate available that would have been cost-prohibitive in the past."
75 of 7-Eleven's new stores will be built in North Texas.

Domo Invades 7-Eleven Stores

Domo 7-Eleven

Domo, a fuzzy brown creature with a giant open-mouth expression, is storming into 7-Eleven stores this fall. Domo apears on Slurpee cups, coffee cups, straws and even on 7-Eleven's hot dog containers. Domo was created by Japanese illustrator and director Tsuneo Goda as the mascot for Japanese public television station NHK in 1998. The Japanese monster's image has spread on the Internet and has become part of popular culture.

Collectible cups feature Domo and his furry sidekicks enjoying Slurpee drinks and one showing Domo experiencing a Brainfreeze. For Domo fans, a tiny flocked Domo character is affixed to premium Slurpee straws, selling for $1.99. There are four Slurpee straws features Domo sporting a different costume and accessories. There is also a three-part Domo webisode - online at slurpee.com and domonation.com - that tells the story of Domo and his friends on a quest for a Slurpee beverage.

7-Eleven is confident that its consumers will go wild for the Domos. Evan Brody, marketing manager for Slurpee and Big Gulp Brands, recently told BrandWeek that its consumers "love crazy Japanese shit."

7-Eleven Adds Brazilian Bold Coffee Blend

7Eleven Bold Coffe

7-Eleven has entered the battle for coffee drinkers with a new premium brew called Brazilian Bold. 7-Eleven says the premium blend features "select Arabica beans grown in the mountains of Central and South America." 7-Eleven will compete with McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts and other retailers offering cheaper alternatives to more expensive cafes like Starbucks.

"In blind taste tests, we found that coffee-drinking consumers really like our Exclusive Blend coffee," said Paul Pierce, 7-Eleven's senior director for merchandising. "We also learned that many young coffee-drinkers prefer a strong, rich flavor, so we developed a coffee to fit that flavor profile. Our new Brazilian Bold scored just as high as strong flavors from national competitors in the taste tests we later conducted. Our customers can create their own personalized hot drinks with no waiting in line to order or for someone else to prepare it, whether they prefer Brazilian Bold straight-up, Colombian with hazelnut syrup and cream, or Exclusive Blend coffee mixed with hot cocoa and topped with cinnamon and mini-marshmallows. Best of all, 7-Eleven offers a greater value, at around a dollar a cup -- no matter what goes into it -- versus typical coffeehouse prices of $3 to $4."

7-Eleven says retail prices for its Brazilian Bold blend will range from 99 cents to $1.79, based upon cup size (12 to 24 ounces) and geographic market. Competition from cheaper coffee take-out alternatives like McDonald's, 7-Eleven and Dunkin Donuts have led Starbucks to try news tactics like value pairings and instant coffee.
