Spice Girls Rock the House at Olympic Closing Ceremony
The 2012 Summer Olympics have come to an end. NBC is tape delay broadcasting the closing ceremonies tonight, but we watched them stream live online. The theme of the show was 50 years of British music and it was entertaining. There were a wide range of musical acts, from New Direction to Annie Lenox. But the highlight of the performances was the return of the Spice Girls. They all looked and sounded fabulous.
We did a double take when we spotted Russell Brand entering the stadium singing
"A World of Imagination" wearing a top hat
sitting on a psychadelic bus. He then
sang "I am the Walrus" with a troop of 60s costumed
dancers and violin players.
Russell has basically become his rock star persona
Aldous Snow from Forgetting Srah Marshall.
Well, he's always looked more like a rock star
than a comedian.
Fat Boy Slim then made an appearance. The producers
made full use of the new stadium's
state of the art laser lighting
system. It really is an amazing venue. Dancers danced
in front of a giant, transparent octopus. It was
all very Magical Mystery Tour.
Jessie J entered singing in a white convertible Rolls Royce.
she sang "Aint' about the Money" before sequing into the
rap portion of the show with Tinie Tempah. Taio Cruz sang "Galileo"
while standing up in a Rolls which was driven around a track
allowing everyone in the stadium to get a look
at him. They then took to the stage to sing
"You Should be Dancing" by the Bee Gees.
Black London taxis then converged on the stage carrying
the Spice Girls. They each sang on top of a taxi
wearing costumes similar to their original
90s cosutmes but reimagined to be a bit more modern. Geri Halliwell referenced her iconic British flag minidress. Victoria Beckham wore a black gown. Baby Spice went for a pink minidress. Melanie Chisolm -- better known as Scary Spice -- rocked a sparkly jumpsuit. They sang "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life." Earlier in the show there was a salute to British fashion, and Victoria's designs got a spot in the lineup. Victoria posted this photo on Twitter and said, "I was a pop star for the night!! I love u @MelanieCmusic, @OfficialMelB, @GeriHalliwell, @EmmaBunton!! we did it!! X vb"
The show then featured the next host country, Brazil and ended with major fireworks. Here are the fireworks as they exploded across the London sky:
