Rare Stradivari Viola May Sell for Over $45 Million

Macdonald Stradivari Viola

A rare Stradivari viola is being auction by Ingles & Hayday and Sotheby's. It is expected to sell for over $45 million. This 'Macdonald' viola of 1719 is own of just two violas made during Stradivari's Golden Period from 1700 to 1720. The 'Macdonald' name for the instrument comes from one of its owners - Godfrey Bosville, the 3rd Baron Macdonald, who purchased the viola in the 1820s.

David Redden, Sotheby's vice chairman, says in a statement, "“Every field is defined by one outstanding masterpiece which casts its shadow not only on its own domain but far beyond. The instruments of Stradivari are in a class of their own among the pinnacles of human craftsmanship and the 'Macdonald' Viola stands at the unquestioned summit."
