President Elect Obama was just an Illinois state senator when he agreed
to be one of three layman restaurant critics to appear on Amanda Puck's show to discuss their favorite restaurants.
Obama offered up a Hyde Park eatery called Dixie Kitchen. And though the 15-year-old restaurant didn't benefit from any free publicity years ago, it no doubt will wind up on the radar screen of a lot of restaurant patrons when the lost episode finally airs twice on WTTW on Jan. 16, again Jan. 18 and once more at 4 a.m. Jan. 20, the day Obama is sworn in as president.
In case you're wondering, a WTTW spokeswoman couldn't tell us exactly why the "Check, Please!" episode with Obama never aired. But for its belated debut this month, the show's producers have apparently re-edited the episode and added more existing Obama footage to enhance the show's appeal just a bit more.
Here's a small bit of the video. It's hilarious: Barack is just as calm, cool and collected as ever, as he intensely discusses the perils of eating too many Johnny Cakes (fried cornmeal cakes) and not saving room for the amazing peach cobbler. Take a look:
Amazon.com has launched an Inauguration Day store. Internet Retailer reports that the site carries everything from big-screen tvs to cardboard cutouts of the President-elect.
Once they are on the mircosite visitors can shop for electronics such as big-screen TVs, Obama-decorated ties or a life-size cardboard cutout of the President-elect and books on presidential history. The inauguration store also features a countdown to the event and a community forum where visitors can start a discussion or add to an existing one.
"A lot of people will be participating in the upcoming inauguration, whether they are planning to attend or host a party at home," says an Amazon spokesman. "We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to prepare for the historic event."
Barack Obama merchandise is one niche category that is sure to remain hot as we start out 2009. We reported earlier about a big store opening in D.C. that's main focus is selling Barack Obama products.
The White House has announced the death of the Bush family cat named India. India was a beautiful 18-years-old black American Shorthair. The Bush family affectionately referred to India as "Kitty" after the Bush daughters arbara and Jenna moved away to college. Here's the official statement.
The President, Mrs. Bush, Barbara, and Jenna are deeply saddened by the passing of their cat India ("Willie"). The 18 year-old female black American Shorthair died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at home at the White House.
When Barbara was nine years old, she named India after the former Texas Ranger baseball player, Ruben Sierra, who was called "El Indio." When Barbara and Jenna moved away to college, India, affectionately called "Kitty" by the family, stayed at the White House with the President and Mrs. Bush.
India was a beloved member of the Bush family for almost two decades. She will be greatly missed.
A White House bio page says India preferred to stay inside and visit the White House library. India's favorite book was If You Take a Mouse to the Movies by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond.
Sasha (7) and Malia (10) Obama are at their first day of school today at Sidwell Friends. Here they get a send off from mom Michelle and dad Barack. They don't look nervous at all, do they?
In Washington, D.C., top hostesses wait with baited breath to see what kind of socializing Michelle and Barack Obama will engage in. Will they be bipartisan socializers like the Reagans and the Clintons, who worked the party circuit to make friends across the aisle and help advance policy? Or will they be like the reclusive Bushes or the Carters, who shunned the party circuit entirely, sometimes with disastrous political results?
A new president's first foray into the social scene in the capital can be heavy with symbolism, a hint of how the first couple plan to engage with unofficial Washington. Failing to do so could mean missing an opportunity to meet the press, make bipartisan overtures and advance the White House political agenda, as other presidents have discovered.
Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, arrived in the capital in 1977 determined not to socialize with the insider crowd, a stance that rankled Democrats in Washington.
"The Carters made the vow that they would never get tangled up in Georgetown dinner parties, and indeed they did not," said Diana McLellan, the author and onetime Washington gossip columnist. "They alienated their base, and it created a huge dislike of Carter. It was catastrophic."
Quickly after arriving in Washington after his election in 1980, Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, enthusiastically made the social rounds, even giving a bipartisan dinner party at the (now-defunct) F Street Club. Mrs. Reagan's social secretary Muffie Brandon Cabot regularly arranged luncheons at private homes so that Mrs. Reagan could make friends. "We were not going to be like the Carters," Michael Deaver, a top Reagan aide who died in 2007, told The Washington Post in 1992.
Landing the president and his wife as a guest at a dinner party is the ultimate social coup in D.C. The article explains all the different tricks and plans one can use to land a presidential visit. One of the sneakiest ploys is to give a party in honor of one of his close aides, making it impossible for him to refuse to attend. That one already worked once, apparently.
We hope the Obamas embrace the social scene. It's a great way to talk things over informally with the other party and try to reduce the animosity at the capitol. And for our own selfish reasons, we can't wait to see what Michelle will wear to all the parties. Please, please don't let them be the "bed by 8:30 pm" types.
The Obama family will be staying at the beautiful, historic Hay-Adams Hotel before they move into the White House.
Opened in 1928, the hotel sits across Lafayette Square from the White House, Obama's eventual work place and home. Its name comes from two historical figures who lived on the site: John Hay, the private assistant to President Abraham Lincoln and later secretary of state, and Henry Adams, an author and descendant of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
The Hay-Adams has 145 rooms and suites, featuring marble bathrooms, intricately carved plaster ceilings and ornamental fireplaces and balconies - with views of the White House, Lafayette Square and St. John's Church - in certain rooms.
Room amenities include custom Italian bed linens and towels, goose down duvets and pillows (hypoallergenic pillows are available; Malia has allergies), plush microfiber bathrobes and slippers for adults and kids, Bose CD music systems with assorted CDs, exclusive Etro toiletries, complimentary Fiji bottled water and a nightly turndown service.
Barack and Michelle's daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will soon be attending school at the Sidwell Friends School so the family needs a place to stay before they get to move into the White House. The Hay-Adams is a great choice. It's a fabulous hotel that offers a clear view of the White House. You can find more information about the hotel on the website at hayadams.com.
Mayor Bloomberg has asked Hillary and Bill Clinton to push the ceremonial button that signals the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball to begin lowering at 11:59 p.m. tonight.
Bloomberg announced the selection on Tuesday morning.
"I can't think of anyone I would rather stand at the crossroads of the world at the beginning of this new year than Bill and Hillary Clinton," Bloomberg said. "Both together and as individuals, Senator and President Clinton have brought hope and opportunity to New York, to the nation, and to the world."
This year's Times Square Ball is double the size of previous balls and is covered in 2,668 Waterford Crystals. Weighing nearly 12,000 pounds and measuring 12 feet in diameter, the ball is 20 percent more energy efficient than last year's - consuming only the same amount of energy per hour as it would take to operate two traditional home ovens.
Organizers of the New Year's Eve party say the bigger, brighter ball will remain in place all year atop the building at 1 Times Square to celebrate other holidays including Valentine's Day, the Fourth of July and Halloween.
They're a great choice to do the honors. It's going to be bitterly cold in New York tonight. Temperatures will in the teens and strong wind gusts will make it feel more like 0 degrees.
Update 1-1-09: You can see a clip of the ball drop in New York City here.
President-elect Barack Obama is a tourism boost for Honolulu, Hawaii where he spent part of his childhood. In the video clip below, CBS says narrated tours of where Obama grew up cost $40 and they are growing in popularity. Local vendors are also selling lots of products with Obama's likeness. CBS says Obama is now the island's best ambassador. GoHawaai.com - Hawaii's official tourism website - has even added an Obama section full of photos of Barack Obama eating shave ice, body surfing and walking on the beach. It also lists places Obama stopped on his recent vacation and provides information about where he grew up.
CBS' Ben Tracy gives the full rundown on the Obamas' Hawaiian vacation. They are staying in a $9 million beachfront home which has five bedroom and fabulous furnishings. Paparazzi somehow slipped the security net and got photos of a shirtless Obama, which have stunned the blogosphere.
He's clearly been working out.
At the end of the segment we get a montage of former presidents in swimswear. Let's just say that Barack is clearly winning the presidential swimsuit competition. Take a look:
We still don't know what gown Michelle will wear to the inaugural balls, but in the meantime the National Museum of American History is taking a look back at first lady fashions over the past 200 years. Every first lady's inaugural gown in in the collection, going back to when Mrs. Taft first started the tradition of donating her gown. It's a fascinating collection which serves as a reference point for American female fashions over the years. Take a look:
Can this really be true? Page Six reports
that Oprah Winfrey is buying a $50 million home in Washington, D.C. to be nearer to the White House and Barack Obamas.
Oprah Winfrey wants to be as close to Barack Obama as possible. Insiders say Winfrey has started a preliminary search for a home in Washington, DC. A nine-bedroom Georgetown mansion she's said to have asked about is listed at $50 million, but another source said, "She has never personally been to see it." We're sure Winfrey will try to swing by during Inauguration week. Her rep didn't return calls.
Perez Hilton says that this
is the home she's looking at. Naturally, it's gorgeous. So why is Oprah really considering a move to D.C.? Does she want to enter politics? Get more involved? Or just hit the D. C. party circuit, which is bound to heat up after the Obamas move in?
Barack Obama has selected
Yale University Professor of African-American studies and Pulitzer Prize finalist Elizabeth Alexander to create and read a poem at the presidential inauguration on January 20, 2009. She will be the fourth poet ever to have such an honor.
Alexander, who met Obama during their time as faculty members at the University of Chicago, is thrilled at the opportunity, and says that her parents are even more excited: "This is an incomparable thrill to them in the way that Obama's presidency is an especially potent and powerful thing for African-Americans in their 70s who have devoted their lives to progress," Alexander says, "To be a part of it, I almost can't imagine it myself."
Alexander follows Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, and Miller Williams as the only poets to read at inauguration ceremonies; she says she hopes, through her poem, "to symbolize and demonstrate is the important role that arts and literature can play in this moment when the country is thinking so keenly about moving forward and coming together." As for her friendship with Obama, Alexander notes, "That friendship makes this opportunity all the more special."
We can't imagine having to write poetry under such a stressful deadline, but no doubt she'll do a fabulous job. You can read more about Elizabeth and her work at her website.
The Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) is ready for President-Elect Barack Obama to "strike" change. The bowling industry is excited by the fact that Obama hinted during a recent interview on 20/20 with Barbara Walters that he would keep the bowling lane at the White House. It seems that Obama will add a basketball court at the White House while still keeping the White House Lane. Barack Obama could use some help with his bowling - a gutter ball bowled by the President-Elect was caught on video earlier this year.
The bowling industry is proposing a makeover of the White House Lane (see above) they say would bring it to the modern 21st century bowling experience. You can see a photograph of the aging White House bowling lane here in a post from swamppolitics.com. The proposed enhanced lane would include a completely new technology surface, cutting-edge bowling balls, a high definition scoring system and light display, a digital stereo sound system, club seating, Bowlopolis kids digital graphics, and modern electronic bumpers.
"Forty years ago, President Nixon made national headlines when he revamped the White House Lane that had first been introduced by Harry Truman. After four decades, it's fair to say that the lane at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is long overdue for a facelift," said Jeff Boje, president of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). "The bowling industry applauds President-Elect Obama for keeping the White House Lane. As a gesture of support and appreciation, we are offering to give the lane a much-needed enhancement and add in all the great amenities that have helped to fuel the continued popularity of bowling and maintain its status as the nation's number one participatory sport and a great American family activity."
Barack Obama already has his tuxedo for the Inaugural Balls. Presumably, he already has his day suit for the swearing in. But that didn't stop top designers from agreeing to Women's Wear Daily's request for sketches of clothing for the President-Elect. From left to right: Brooks Brother day suit, Brooks Brothers Ferragamo day suit, Nautica evening wear and a fabulous tuxedo from Marc Jacobs.
Jim Warlick of Political Americana has opened a new store a block from the White House that carries tons of Barack Obama merchandise.
A 5,000 feet, wall to wall, ceiling to floor of Barack Obama
Almost everything you can think of t-shirts, buttons, and mugs.
Anthony Casolaro bought a baseball cap for his daughter.
Customer Anthony Casolaro says "she wants to go the inauguration but I told her she may have to join the other three million people on the lawn."
Customer Stephanie Gorski says "I got a t-shirt for my niece, which is just exactly what they wanted. They've been Obama fans forever. They're little kids, about four."
The timing is obvious with Barack Obama's inauguration just weeks away. The store even sells Obama hot sauce according to the CNN video below. The store plans to open a website later this month. Warlick says in the CNN clip that Obama's image will "be on more items than the Pope probably by the time this is over."
