MySpace is launching
a music service that will compete with iTunes.
Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group hope it is. The three label giants have formed a joint venture with the Internet behemoth to weave their vast catalogs of tunes into the fabric of MySpace's thriving online community of music enthusiasts.
MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe called the deal to create MySpace Music "a historic step" for the music biz in its long struggle to come to grips with the digital era. MySpace Music will be jointly owned by the four partners and have a dedicated management team that will report to DeWolfe and a board composed of reps from Sony BMG, UMG and WMG.
"This is the first time the music companies have gotten together and said, 'We're going to do something really different,'" DeWolfe said. "We believe that this is really a historic step in the music industry redefining itself, both with the partnership and the product (to come). There's no other product on the Internet that looks anything like this."
The partnership will extend beyond making music available for sale online, as Apple has done with its iTunes Music Store. The MySpace Music venture envisions making music and related content -- from concert tickets to T-shirts and other merchandise -- easily accessible to MySpace's 110 million users through its dedicated music and voluminous artist profile pages, which draw about 30 million unique users a month.
Thursday's announcement was long on vision and short on specifics. The partners would not comment on the ownership structure of MySpace Music or how revenues would be shared among the partners. DeWolfe emphasized that the venture's business plan was developed "collaboratively" so that "both MySpace and the labels will make money."
The music industry was basically blindsided by the digital revolution: this is a step towards embracing the new way that music is listened to and purchased. It's a very interesting development that is being closely watched by everyone in the music industry. Will it slow down illegal downloads? That remains to be seen.
Mariah Carey has just passed
Elvis Presley for the most #1 singles on the Billboard chart. Her latest #1 single is "Touch My Body" She's second only to the
Beatles for the most #1 hits. That's quite a milestone. Mariah is doing quite a bit of press for her new album: See some great new pictures and read an in-depth interview with Mariah at Parade.
On Being an Outcast:
"I felt very much like an outcast when I was younger. No matter where I went, there was always this sense of not really falling into place or into one category. I moved around a lot when I was growing up, so nobody knew me and I was never one thing or the other. Being biracial, I didn't really have somebody to look at and say, 'Okay, this person is exactly the same as me, and they're out there.' A lot of kids have said that to me, 'Until you put your first record out, I didn't feel like there was anybody that was the same as me.' People who don't feel like they fit in can identify with me. I promised myself when I was a little girl that I would never forget what it felt like to be a kid. I never wanted to grow up and be out of touch with what that feels like."
On Her "Breakdown":
"How do you climb back from the shambles when everybody counts you out? That can be a very difficult thing to come to terms with, especially when you've had so much success from such an early age. I have such faith in God that I really had to surrender everything and just know that I was going to be okay. That's truly where I had to go to when it felt like the bottom. More than anything, it was learning to grow up and take care of myself. Not treat myself like the corporation wanted to treat me, but treat myself like a human being. I've faced my worst fears and come out of them okay. Everything is always going to be all right as long as I hang on to the person inside of me."
She's a fighter, there's no question about that. After the Glitter disaster everyone counted her out. And now she just passed Elvis on the charts.
Go, Mimi!
As always, there are many Christmas albums out this season. Why do stars put out Christmas albums? The San Francisco Chronicleexplains that Christmas albums make big, big bucks.
Slowly, inexorably, Christmas music worked its way back into the pop landscape until it finally reached a pervasive saturation unmatched since its heyday of '50s holidays with Coca-Cola magazine advertisements, specially decorated cartons of cigarettes and Perry Como TV specials. Even before Thanksgiving, stores and malls are now filled with twinkly, tinkly versions of "Winter Wonderland" and "Sleigh Ride." Father Guido Sarducci suggests an every-other-year moratorium on playing "Little Drummer Boy."
"I'm still sick of it from last year," he says on his protest Christmas record, "One Hundred Bulbs on the Christmas Tree Party."
A amazing parade of willing doofuses provides a steady stream of new Christmas records, without a trace of irony, wit or redemptive attribute of any sort - pure cashing in. Do you think there is any other possible explanation for a two-CD set of Christmas songs by Toby Keith?
**
Nobody makes a Christmas album unless they already have a following. It is seen as a way to extend the brand. Sooner or later, everybody who lasts long enough in the record business makes a Christmas record: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John, the Kinks, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Linda Ronstadt. Even hip, edgy rock acts you might think would be immune: R.E.M., the Pretenders, U2, the Ramones, Rufus Wainwright.
One reason for strong Christmas album sales is that is we do get tired of hearing these same songs over and over again and so hearing them
in a new voice can help make them seem a little different. Some people also like to buy everything their favorite artist does.
This year's big Christmas album success story is Josh Groban's album. Josh Groban's Noel has been selling like hot cakes ever since Oprah put it on her list of favorite things. Groban has been ruling the Billboard chart with three straight weeks at number one.
Some of the other artists with new Christmas albums include Michael Buble, Olivia Newton-John, Keith Sweat, Toby Keith, Pam Tillis and
Rick Springfield. Disney has an album out called Disney Channel Holiday. Yes, Miley Cyrus sings in it which is sure to drive the younger kids crazy. There are also a few unusual albums out this year like Larry the Cable Guy's Christmastime in Laryland and Psychostick's The Flesh Eating Rollerskate Holiday Joyride. Neither album sounds like it would put you in the Hollywood mood. Last year the unexpected and surprisingly entertaining Christmas album was Twisted Sister's Twisted Christmas.
Here's a list of some of the new Christmas albums out this year.
The music industry is in quite a turmoil. Radiohead is selling their latest album via online download. Nine Inch Nails has stepped away from its record label and plans to sell directly to their fans. Oasis is rumored to be considering a similar move. Madonna has ditched her record company and turned over her music sales, concerts and licensing deals to a concert promotion firm. Now, we hear that the Spice Girls are going to sell their new album at Victoria's Secret -- see here. The truth is young people simply don't buy at music stores anymore: they buy their music online. Music stores will soon be a thing of the past.
The hair from legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven has been fused into a diamond and auctioned off on eBay for charity. The synthetic diamond is one of three diamonds created by LifeGem from the carbon in a lock of Beethoven's hair. The second diamond belongs to John Reznikoff, who provided the Beethoven hair sample. In case you didn't Reznikoff holds the Guinness World Record for the largest and most valuable collection of celebrity hair. Reznikoff's celebrity hair collection may be even more valuable than previously thought if they are going to be fusing diamonds out of it. The third diamond is being kept by LifeGem for its celebrity diamond collection.
LifeGem is a company that creates diamonds using carbon from cremated remains as well as from locks of hair. The have a price list here. LifeGem's faq says it takes 6 to 9 months to complete the diamond depending on the color. The Telegraphdescribes the steps LifeGem took to create the diamond from Beethoven's hair.
Experts at LifeGem HQ in Chicago then burned the hair without oxygen to ensure it did not disintegrate.
They extracted 130 milligrammes of carbon from 10 strands and divided it into three separate diamond presses.
Each of the presses was exposed to temperatures of 3,000 degrees celsius and placed under one million pounds of pressure for a two week growing period.
Once ready, the stones were cut into Round Brilliant Diamonds, polished and then certified.
The Beethoven diamond auction can be found here on eBay. Bidding for the diamond has passed the $200,000 mark. The item has a buy-it-now price of $1 million. LifeGem's page says that 100% of the proceeds from the auction will go to charity.
Steve Jobs was pummeled with furious emails after his announcement yesterday of a $200 price cut to the iPhone. Early adopters were really angry that they had paid full price when a price cut was just around the corner. So, Jobs issued an apology and has offered a $100 in-store credit to customers who bought the iPhone. The details haven't been worked out yet, but kudos to Steve for being responsive to his fan base customers. His open letter to customers says:
To all iPhone customers:
I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.
First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.
Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.
Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.
Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.
We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.
Steve Jobs announced upgrades to the iPod family and a price cut for the iPhone. It was all rather complicated, but essentially here's what he said:
The iPod Nano is now wider and comes in cool colors (pictured above). The 8GB Nano will cost $199 and the 4GB will retail for $149.
The old, full-sized iPods will now be called iPod Classics and now have 160GB of storage.
The new Apple iPod Touch media player looks a lot like the iPhone. Essentially it's an iPhone without the phone. The 8GB model is $299 and the 16GB retails for $399. (not pictured). The iPod Touch has the ability to connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi wireless technology, and a mini Web browser that can view YouTube videos and search Google and Yahoo.
The iPhone's price will drop by $200 . The 8GB version now costs $399.
Ringtones for the iPhone are available at iTunes.com for 99 cents.
Apple cut a deal with Starbucks: when customers show up at Starbucks with a laptop running iTunes or an iPhone, the devices will automatically recognize the store's Wi-Fi connection so you can buy more things from iTunes.
Got all that? Because it took a really long time to wade through all the press releases. In any event, it appears clear that it will be an Apple Christmas.

Apple announced that it has sold its 100 millionth iPod, which makes the iPod the fastest selling music player in history. iPods are unbiquitous now, but they didn't even exist in the public consciousness before November 2001, when the first iPod was sold. Since then, Apple has introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and two generations of iPod shuffle. There are now tens of millions of people who use their iPods along with the iTunes online music store.
"At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that."
"It's hard to remember what I did before the iPod," said Mary J. Blige, Grammy Award-winning singer. "iPod is more than just a music player, it’s an extension of your personality and a great way to take your favorite music with you everywhere you go."
"Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums," said John Mayer, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. "Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept the spirit of what it means to be a music lover alive."
"I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere," said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. "I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating."
What, no quote from Bono?? Uno, dos, tres....quatorze! That translates roughly to "We want an iPhone, right now."
InformationWeek reports that revenues from mobile downloads have soared to $4.1 billion and ringtones are a big part of the picture.
Mobile phone users are downloading data at increasing rates with Verizon Wireless attracting the highest level of interest, according to a report released Tuesday by IDC.
In all, the 230 million wireless subscribers in the United States bought a total of $4.1 billion in data services in the third quarter of 2006.
"Our research found that at $7.27 spent per-customer on data services in 3Q06, Verizon Wireless became the new market leader among the national operators, eclipsing Sprint Nextel, the long-time leader in this metric at $7.15," said IDC's Julien Blin. The two leading firms employ CDMA technology.
Blin, who is research analyst for IDC's Wireless and Mobile Communications program, said Verizon leads in total wireless data revenue, data percentage of average revenue per user (ARPU), and data spending. However, Sprint and other national carriers pace the market in some selected service offerings.
Geek.com reports that the IDC study found that "20% of subscribers purchase at least one ringtone every quarter." You can find a list of ringtone retailers here. Billboard Magazine maintains a list of the bestselling ringtones called Hot Ringtones.
Every year there are new Christmas albums from popular music artists to help put a new twist on the well-known Christmas carols and songs. This year there are new albums from Sarah McLachlan, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Aimee Mann, Wynonna Judd, Aly & AJ, Brad Paisley and several others. Artists continue to come out with holiday albums each Christmas because they can really sell -- James Taylor and Sarah McLachlan's Christmas albums are currently topping Amazon.com's list of bestselling albums at #1 and #2.
We were concerned when we saw that the ubiquitous Rachael Ray has a Christmas album out called How Cool Is That Christmas but fortunately it is just a compilation of classics -- she isn't singing! Twisted Sister also has an album out this year called Twisted Christmas but you should really watch the video of Twisted Sister singing "O Come All Ye Faithful" before you buy it so you know what you are getting yourself into.
Articles on MSNBC.com and Christian Science Monitor provide a good overview of this year's new Christmas music. Other good articles reviewing the new Christmas albums from popular music stars can be found here, here, here, here and here.
Here is a list of some of this year's new Christmas albums.

Sure you love your iPod -- but you don't love those scratches that they are so prone to. There are a zillion different kinds of iPod cases out there, but this one -- called iFrogz -- really caught our eye. iFrogz makes a three-piece silicone case that protects your iPod and allows you to design the look of the case.
"iPod lovers come in every shade and color under the sun and with millions of tastes and preferences," said Scott Huskinson, president and CEO of ifrogz. "There's absolutely no reason why the look of their iPods shouldn't be as unique and customizable as their playlists. Most case makers give us only a few basic colors to choose from. ifrogz sees things differently."
Whereas many silicone iPod cases are flimsy, gummy and collect lint, ifrogz uses only 100 percent high-grade, polished silicone that has been specially treated to resist dust and dirt. This makes the case smooth and silky to the touch, in addition to being thick and durable.
ifrogz cases also differ from every other iPod case on the market by providing three distinct components for total protection -- and complete color customization -- of your iPod: Wrapz(TM), Bandz(TM) and Screenz(TM).
Wrapz, the main case component of the ifrogz system, cover the entire player from top to bottom and expose only the screen (which is covered by a clear plastic protector), scroll wheel, headphone jack and other ports.
The thick, durable Bandz then stretch completely around the sides of the iPod, thus protecting exposed ports and adding a bonus element of style. Bandz feature only a single opening over the iPod's headphone jack for optimum protection of the device's connection ports.
Screenz, the final -- and most customizable -- element of the ifrogz system, are protective sheets of transparent plastic that lay over the player's Click Wheel. With more than 200 unique Screenz, used in tandem with the 38 colors of both Wrapz and Bandz to result in 300,000 possible combinations, it's highly unlikely your ifrogz case could ever be mistaken for someone else's.
You can design your own case at iFrogz.com. It's pretty easy and they lead you through it: you select the color for the wrap, the color for the band and then pick the design for the transparent screen that goes over the click wheel. The price depends on the mix, but it's about $25 on average.
Eminem has autographed and designed a line of limited-edition Air Max sneakers to be auctioned on eBay for charity. 100% of the auction proceeds will go to the Marshall Mathers Foundation and UNHCR's ninemillion.org campaign. All proceeds will be shared on an equal basis between the two charities. The auction's page can be found here.
Multi-platinum rapper Eminem has designed limited-edition uppers of eight different shoes in the Air Max series; from the Air Max ’87 (originally designed by Tinker Hatfield, one of the world’s foremost footwear designers), all the way up to the most recent Air Max 360. His reinterpretation of the upper has been laid onto the original blueprints for each of the Air Max shoes to create a unique set of shoe designs. An ardent fan of the Air Max and avid collector of sneakers, Eminem jumped at the chance to imprint his own personal touch on the world of sneaker collectors and raise funds for disadvantaged youths, both in his home state of Michigan and around the world in refugee camps.
8 full sets of the footwear will be auctioned over the next few weeks. The auction ends with a final round of auctioned sneakers on eBay that starts October 3rd and ends on October 10th.
Christina Aguilera has announced that her third studio album will be released by RCA Records on August 15, 2006. The album, called Back to Basics sounds like it's going to be fabulous:
A modern take on vintage jazz, soul and blues from the 1920s, '30s and '40s, the album is wildly inventive with a throwback style creating a sound that's gritty and raw. "Back To Basics" reunites her with producer Linda Perry as well as creating new collaborations with producers such as DJ Premier.
The sexy upbeat first single, "Ain't No Other Man," produced by DJ Premier and Charles Roane, is set for release on June 12th. It will be world-premiered on the MTV Movie Awards on June 8th.
"This is a concept album that follows a bold, set vision," stated Aguilera. "The touchstones are Billie Holiday, Otis Redding, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald... what I used to call my 'fun music' when I was a little girl."
"Back To Basics" utilizes an orchestra, choir, string quartet and jazz horns, as well as techniques that offer a vintage sound and sensibility. "I Got Trouble" incorporates a scratchy blues feel, while "Candy Man" recalls the tight harmonies of all-girl groups from the '30s and '40s, "Save Me From Myself" is an emotionally naked, raw-sounding song dedicated to her husband. "Thank You," dedicated to her fans, features DJ Premier splicing bits of "Genie In A Bottle" with fan voicemail messages. Also sure to appeal to Aguilera fans is the risque song "Nasty Naughty Boy" (which has a '20s burlesque feel) and the sassy club track "Still Dirrty."
Chritina is really rocking the red lipstick and the Jean Harlow hairstyle: it's really working for us. We'll definitely tune into the MTV Music Awards on June 8th to hear Xtina belt out her new single.
A new type of sneaker, called Code M, is coming from Dada Footware in April that includes an MP3 player. Personal Tech Pipeline has the specs for the new shoe which include a storage capacity of 100 songs, a six-hour battery and
a wireless headset that works using Bluetooth.
The company says the device will store 100 songs with a six-hour battery life. A USB port on the lateral side of the shoe allows downloading of music and re-charging of the battery. The wireless headset works via Bluetooth, and picks up music from the shoes as far away as 30 feet.
Sometimes a trend goes too far....and this might be one of those times. When it comes to music storage, the shoes are beat soundly by the latest iPods. The new iPods can store 15,000 songs compared to the Code M's 100 song capacity.
The shoes look awfully shiny in this picture, but they still might be cool for the club scene. A second picture on Dada's website shows the shoes from a different angle and they look less blingy. Code M shoes will become available April 6 at a suggested retail price of $199.99. One thing's for sure: do not remove these shoes and leave them lying around. Because they certainly won't be there when you get back.
A new study from Comscore reveals which holiday gifts consumers are searching for online. It is no surprise that the popular iPod and hard-to-find Xbox 360 have topped consumer searches. Harry Potter was also popular thanks to the release of the 6th book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, in July and the recent release of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire film which is now in theatres. Here were the most popular searches in November.
iPod - 6.6 million searches
Xbox 360 - 5.0 million searches
Harry Potter - 4.8 million searches
Star Wars - 2.5 million searches
Barbie - 2.1 million searches
PlayStation - 1.9 million searches
The above data shows searches for November according to Comscore. We expect that Narnia books and products might creep into December's top search boosted by the films strong box office debut.
