Martha Stewart Creates Gingerbread Downton Abbey

Posted on January 1, 2015

Martha Stewart is a huge fan of the TV series Downton Abbey. She created a gingerbread version of the Grantham mansion, called Gingerbread Abbey, to celebrate the return of the series to PBS for the show's fifth season. Season five premieres on PBS on January 4th.

Gingerbread Abbey features 65 caramel windows. The building required 66 cups of flour, 22 eggs and 11 cups of molasses for ingredients. It took two bakers from Martha's team two hours to put the gingerbread mansion together and 34 hours to decorate it. The dog Isis can be seen sitting in front of Gingerbread Abbey.

Here is a video showing Martha's team building the gingerbread mansion. Martha shows the template that was used to build the structure. The caramel windows are particularly impressive. Martha's team left one window for her to decorate. She used a plastic piping bag for the icing. Martha invited Downton Abbey star Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore) to the Martha Stewart Kitchen to preview the large gingerbread house. Take a look:

Martha Stewart has two shows on PBS, Martha Stewart's Cooking School and Martha Bakes. She will also soon be opening her first cafe in the Starrett-Lehigh Building in Manhattan.
