Major Retailers Push Black Friday Into Thanksgiving

Many retailers are starting Black Friday on Thanksgiving evening this year. This is happening despite Black Friday arriving on an earlier date - Nov 23 - than it has in several years. CNN/Money has declared that Black Thursday is the new Black Friday. ABC News reports that some retail employeers and their families are very unhappy with the earlier start and the push into their holiday.

An MSN Money story says retail data indicates stores could potentially make more money by opening earlier. One reason for Black Friday is not just to sell products, but to get people in a shopping mood. However, if retailers push to hard there could be a backlash.

Sears, Target, Toys R Us and Walmart are among the retailers opening up on Thanksgiving evening. To get the best doorbusters people will be lining up around dinner time. Best Buy opens up at midnight on Black Friday, but starts handing out tickets for doorbusters two hours before that. Jcpenney is among retailers bucking the trend, by sticking with an early Black Friday opening time of 6 a.m. Below is a short chart of opening times from the big box retailers.
