Jim Carrey Parodies Matthew McConaughey's Lincoln Commercials

Posted on October 27, 2014

Jim Carrey hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend. In this sketch, Carrey turns in a hilarious impersonation of Matthew McConaughey doing Rust Cohle in a series of ads for Lincoln's new MKC.

Carrey nails McConaughey's Southern drawl as he drives his SUV and ponders life's big questions. Carrey intones, "Sometimes you've got to go back to actually move forward, and I don't mean go back and reminisce or chase ghosts, I mean take a big step back like go from winning an Oscar to doing a car commercial." (ouch) He continues his soliloquy: "My agent was like, 'I could understand if you did this right after The Lincoln Lawyer. That would have made sense.' But you don't buy a Lincoln 'cause it makes sense. You do it 'cause you love it -- or 'cuz you're an Uber driver."

Carrey also mimics McConaughey's gesture of rubbing his fingers together as he talks. But of course in this parody, it's a booger he's contemplating throwing out the window or something even worse. In the next commercial, Carrey continues his dark musings when a child pipes up from the back seat wanting to know, "Dad, are you OK?" The little girl next to him points out that he is driving five miles an hour. McConaughey then wonders whose kids those are.

For the last vignette he has an unfortunate encounter with the Allstate agent played by Dennis Haysbert in the ongoing commercials. Kenan Thompson does a very nice Haysbert impersonation. It's really funny. And Lincoln didn't mind, saying they can take a joke. Well, why shouldn't they? Millions of people have now seen the ad again and been reminded that Lincoln has a new SUV for sale. The parody is of McConaughey, not of the car -- which looks great in the ads. Take a look:
