Jeff Bezos Shocks 60 Minutes Crew: Amazon to Deliver Packages by Unmanned Drones
Jeff Bezos blew the minds of Charlie Rose and his producing team during a 60 Minutes interview. Bezos did a surprise unveiling of his new project: Amazon Air, which uses drones to drop packages on people's lawns withing 30 minutes of orderings. The octocopters are dispatched from a a distribution center and they fly using GPS to locate the customer's house. They land in the front yard, drop off the package and leave. Bezos says his biggest challenge will be convincing the FAA that the delivery method is safe. But he hopes it will be in place in major metropolitan areas in 4-5 years. Here is a clip in which Bezos springs the surprise on Charlie Rose. The producers talk about how they couldn't guess what the surprise was, although Bezos said he would give the producer half his fortune and send her to Vegas with it if she could guess correctly. Alas, no one guessed correctly. Obviously there are a lot of technical aspects to be worked out: ensuring toasters and ipads aren't falling out of the sky on unsuspecting pedestrians and vehicles if a drone malfunctions, establishing operating parameters in bad weather and making sure the drones themselves can't be hacked.
