Heinz Launches Sriracha Flavored Ketchup

Posted on February 11, 2015

Heinz has launched Sriracha flavored ketchup. It is sold in the brand's upside-down 14-ounce plastic squeeze bottles. The bottle has a green and red label and an image of a chile.

Heinz's new ketchup comes amidst a Sriracha food business boom. Sriarcha is a type of Asian chili sauce. It is made from chili pepper paste, distilled vinegar, garlic, salt and sugar. The L.A. Times notes that the most popular and original Sriracha is produced by Huy Fong Foods. The Huy Fong Sriracha bottle features a rooster and a green cap.

David Tran, the founder of Huy Fong, is not interested in trademarking the product and reportedly sees all the competition as free publicity. Huy Fong is definitely getting a sales boost as consumers learn of the flavor but in the long run it seems Tran could have made more money with a trademark. The L.A. Times reports that Tran's product is getting competition from many other companies in addition to Heinz.

Tabasco has its own version of the sauce on the market, Tabasco Sriracha Sauce. The L.A. Times story notes that Taco Bell and Pizza Hut are experiment with Sriracha seasoning. Kellogg launched Sriracha Pringles last year. There are also many other Sriracha sauces in stores. The article does say at least that Tran's company is protecting its signature bottle design.

The new Heinz product is being currently being sold at select retailers, including Walmart and Target. It costs $2.69.

Joseph Giallanella, Brand Manager of Heinz Tomato Ketchup, said in a statement, "Building off of our successful line of flavored ketchups, fans told us that they would love another bold take on their favorite condiment. The new offering adds a new kick to your favorite foods and recipes, pairing well with cheeseburgers, French fries and hot dogs, and is the perfect flavor boost for chicken and eggs."
