The Land's End Artwork Tote for Mother's Day

Photo of Lands end artwork tote

Land's End has a very cute idea for Mother's Day: the Artwork Tote bag. We love Land's End totes for their durability and multiplicity of sizes they come in. Now you can upload your favorite photo and put it on the bag. It's a great project for the kids to give to Mom (Dad, an older sibling or a caring aunt will have to step in with the emailing the photo and paying part, of course).

The totes start at $34.50. You can go to LandsEnd.com and it explains how to do it. It's easy and if you order by April 28th, it will make it to mom by Mother's Day.

Barbie Goes Green

Photo of BarbieBcause green toteBarbie has gone green. Mattel has launched a collection of environmentally friendly accessories for girls called Barbie BCause. The collection repurposes excess fabric and trimmings from other Barbie doll fashions and products which would otherwise be discarded. The use of excess fabrics creates a fun patchwork style.

The collection is being sold exclusively at Toys "R" Us and includes handbags, coin purses, hats, tote bags, pillows and diaries. Each item is a bit different, due to the nature of the recycling.

"Barbie is always a reflection of current cultural trends and issues, and girls are increasingly aware of making a green statement," said Richard Dickson, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Media and Entertainment, Worldwide, Mattel Brands. "Barbie BCause is for eco-conscious girls who believe that being environmentally-friendly is the right thing to do, and we are thrilled to give extra meaning and extra style to what was once just extra Barbie doll fabric."

The items retail between $6 and $20 and are pretty cute.

Victoria Beckham for Marc Jacobs

Photo of Victoria Beckham in a Marc Jacobs ad

This is the new ad Victoria Beckham is doing for Marc Jacobs. We adore Victoria, but we have to be honest. This is not working for us. At all. Nice handbag, though. Well, enough said.

Keitth Richards Loves His Louis Vuitton

Photo of Keith Richards in Louis Vuitton adKeith Richards of the Rolling Stones is the newest face in Louis Vuitton's ad campaign called "core values." The core values campaign showcases the original monogrammed line and is focused on reminding customers of the long history of Louis Vuitton as a premier luggage maker for those who travel the world.
No matinee idols for Louis Vuitton. Its latest poster boy, Keith Richards, has deep wrinkles, smudged eyeliner and unruly hair as he sits strumming a guitar in an untidy hotel suite. And Antoine Arnault, Vuitton's head of communications, couldn't be more pleased. "We thought it was important to continue with someone unexpected," Arnault said of the Richards ad, slated to break in a range of general-interest titles in April. "I think when people are flipping through a magazine, this will stop them."

A legendary guitar player and a founding member of The Rolling Stones, Richards is the latest personality to appear in Vuitton's "core values" campaign, designed to underscore the brand's travel heritage and classic monogram leather goods as a balance to its fashion-driven marketing. Launched last fall, the first batch of ads -- starring Mikhail Gorbachev, Catherine Deneuve and tennis deities Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf — will continue to appear in tandem with the Richards image. The new spot comes with the tag line, "Some journeys cannot be put into words," and the rocker's haunting, hypnotic expression says it all.

Arnault recalled that, when Annie Leibovitz displayed the photograph on a computer monitor after the shoot, Richards exclaimed: "It looks like a Rembrandt." Albeit one with many rock 'n' roll details, including black scarves printed with skulls covering the table lamps — a Richards touch — and a custom-made Vuitton guitar case tossed on the bed.
Keith Richards' certainly has that "well-traveled" "wild journey" look about him. Presumably the idea is that Keith had his trusty LV luggage at his side during all his amazing adventures. We actually like the original LV monogram logo -- it just has that classic look that goes with pretty much anything.

Isabella Rossellini Asks Us to Buy Italian

Photo of Isabella RosseliniThe "Made in Italy" stamp usually means high quality today -- any fashionista knows that. But what she may not know is that Italy has been facing stiff competition from China, which is producing cheap designer knockoffs in droves. Italy has economic troubles and has decided to fight back in the international trade wars with what it does best: top-quality, luxury goods. Towards that end the Italian Trade Commission ("ICE") has launched a new ad campaign called "Made in Italy." ICE has named Isabella Rossellini as the spokesperson for the campaign which will be introduced to the United States in February, 2008.

Shot in Rome (where Isabella was born), the new Made In Italy TV, print and radio campaign celebrates the Italian fashion, accessories, jewelry and home products. Isabella Rossellini urges Americans to "Let yourself be charmed by an Italian." She talks about the handcrafted goods that made Italian products stand out.

Ambassador Umberto Vattani, President of the ICE, said: "With this exciting new campaign, we are proud to showcase the exceptional heritage of excellence to be discovered in Italian-made products, and we celebrate the charm and elegance of the Italian lifestyle as experienced through the enchanting world of fashion, accessories and interior decor."

Isabella Rossellini was thrilled to get on board, saying "Italian style signifies quality. Quality gained from centuries of work by artists and artisans and combined with the Italian charm, humor, and warmth. It is an irresistible combination. I am very proud to be representing Made in Italy for this campaign."

We think the campaign is an excellent idea: we adore Italy, Isabella and have an especial fondness for authentic Italian leather goods. And fashion. And jewelry. And scarves. And furniture. And...well, you get the idea. Now if only the dollar weren't sinking to an all-time low against the Euro...

Stores Scramble to Create Stylish, Free Shopping Bags

Photo of Lord and Taylor shopping bagThe New York Times reports on the latest obsession: the free shopping bag with a store's logo on it. Stores are going bonkers trying to make their shopping bags durable and cute so that customers will re-use it and display the store's logo when they do.
A team of designers at Saks Fifth Avenue envisioned "a piece of modern art" and hired a renowned graphic artist to create it. Their counterparts at Lord & Taylor demanded five prototypes, even traveling to a Korean factory to oversee manufacturing. Over at Bergdorf Goodman, staff members held secretive deliberations that stretched late into the night for nine months. The focus of all this scurrying was not this fall's couture line or next spring's resort collection. It was shopping bags.

Once a flimsy afterthought in American retailing - used to lug a purchase home from the store, then tossed into the trash - the lowly, free store bag is undergoing a luxurious makeover. From upscale emporiums to midprice chains, retailers are engaged in a heated competition to make the most durable, fashionable shopping bags. They are investing millions of dollars in new flourishes like plastic-coated paper (Macy's and Juicy Couture) and heavy fabric cord handles (Abercrombie & Fitch and Scoop).

Behind the battle of the bags is a significant shift in behavior that has turned consumers into walking billboards for stores. In cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, customers have begun treating shopping bags as disposable purses that can be reused for weeks, if not months, to carry laundry to the cleaners, books to the beach or lunch to the office. But only the best bags make the cut. So stores, sensing a marketing opportunity, are racing to transform bare-bones bags into lavish, thick ones that will become free advertising. "It's an unspoken goal," said Terron E. Schaefer, senior vice president for marketing at Saks, which just redesigned its bags to be sleeker and heftier. "We want people to keep the bag."
Steve Madden has cute bags in a bunch of different colors that hold up pretty well. The Gap's bags deteriorate before you get home. Lord and Taylor's bags are expensive for the industry (they cost 80 cents to manufacture) but the cost is well worth it -- Lord and Taylor bags are stylish and durable. But Bergdorf's is not to be outdone. It's been redesigning its bags which will be seen in Fall 2008. Until then, the design is a dark secret.

Hayden Panettiere Loves Her Hayden Bag

Photo of Hayden PanettiereHayden Panettiere is the new face of Dooney & Bourke. Peter Dooney is aiming squarely at young consumers with his new design, The Hayden Bag. Hayden was the inspiration for the handbag, which the Heroes actress will pose with in print ads. Hayden told Peter what she wanted: a large leather shoulder bag with puffy pleats, a buckle closure and great style. So that's what she got. The bag is a limited edition made in Florence, Italy and retails for $500.

The bags are scheduled to hit Dooney & Bourke retail boutiques by the end of the year. They will also be available at department stores such as Bloomingdale's, Lord & Taylor, Macy's, and Nordstrom and online at dooney.com.

Hayden said there is an arrest warrant out for her in Japan because of her actions in trying to save dolphins from slaughter by Japanese fisherman. We think her stance is very brave and that the Japanese government's position on killing dolphins and whales is absolutely despicable. (The U.S. government has been at odds with Japan over its merciless and wanton killing of whales for years.) Annoy the dolphin and whale killers and support Hayden, we say.

Hogan's Handbag Faux Pas

Handbag maker Hogan thought it had a great idea: designing new handbags named after famous women. But someone in marketing didn't do his research and now te company is being sued by rocker Chrissie Hynde.
It was almost a brilliant idea. Trendy handbag designer Hogan just launched a groovy range named after rock chicks. They called a pony-skin version the Chrissie, after Chrissie Hynde - who is a prominent anti-leather campaigner. Oops.

"I never thought I'd be moved to consider filing a lawsuit, but as soon as I heard my name was being used to promote bags made of dead-animal skin, I started exploring my legal options with my friends at PETA," Hynde told Gatecrasher. "At first, I thought this must be a joke, it's so outrageous and thoughtless." In the past, Hynde's passionate aversion to leather has put her on the other side of the law.

In 2000, the Pretenders front woman was arrested after trashing the window display in the Gap's flagship Times Square store. She and fellow PETA protesters destroyed leather pants and jackets that featured in Gap's heavily publicized "Everybody in Leather" campaign. A spokeswoman for Hogan did not return calls yesterday.
The moral of this story: always get permission from a celebrity before naming a handbag/lipstick/perfume after her.

Back to School: The Bulletproof Backpack

Photo of the bulletproof backpackWe've always loved the back to school regimen of buying new pencils, notebooks and a fab outfit for the first day back that's guaranteed to impress our friends and confound our enemies. But this is one accessory we'd never heard of: a bulletproof backpack. It's no joke: these things are selling like crazy.

Joe Currant and Mike Pelonzi are both parents who were worried about their childrens' safety in light of all the school shootings, such as the Columbine tragedy. So they created a bulletproof, lightweight backpack which will also repel knife attacks. "There is no guarantee in life for anything. This product is a tool." said Mr Pelonzi. The backpack is certified to the same limits as a police vest, but it weigh only one twentieth as much. The backpack is also marketed towards travelers.

The backpacks come in several sizes and retail for $175 at MyChildsBackpack.com. The idea of children having to wear bulletproof backpacks is so appalling that it's hard to even get a grip on the concept. It's horrifying. As far as adults go, it's a pretty good product. But if Homeland Security notices that you have a bulletproof backpack at the airport, will you get pulled over for a body cavity search? Will it make you look suspicious, like you're going to set off a bomb or something? Because that would not be good.

Cameron Diaz's Fashion Disaster

Photo of Cameron Diaz and her communist handbag Cameron Diaz went to Peru to shoot a documentary and get a little tourism in at the ancient city of Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, she caused an international incident when she wore this hideous green purse with a giant red star and a Chairman Mao slogan written in Chinese characters. The locals suffered horribly in a war against Maoist rebels and were outraged she would wear such a purse. She has apologized though.
The Shrek star visited the historical Machu Picchu site with a green bag which had a red star and the words "serve the people" printed in Chinese. It evoked memories of a Peruvian war against Maoist rebels in the 1980s and '90s, when up to 69,000 people died. Diaz admitted she did not realise the slogan's "potentially hurtful nature". "I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have inadvertently offended," she said in a statement released to the Associated Press.

"The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China." She went on: "I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering, and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history." Diaz wore the bag while sightseeing at the Incan city of Machu Picchu And she spoke of Peruvians' beauty and warmth, saying she wished "for their continued healing".

Her appearance with the bag had drawn criticism from prominent local human rights activist Pablo Rojas. "It alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims," he said on Friday. "I don't think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology did so much damage."
The moral of this story is: don't buy clothing or accessories that are plastered with slogans in foreign languages you don't speak. Because you just never know what incredibly offensive statement you may be making. Although we don't think Cameron did it intentionally, how ignorant do you have to be to not know what the national symbol of the Chinese Communist party is? Anyone who got through high school history class knows that a lot of people suffered because of Chairman Mao's insane ideas and accompanying Orwellian slogans. Get a clue -- and a new handbag.

Is Your Handbag Full of Germs?

ABC News has a horrifying article explaining how our handbags are apparently seething with nasty microorganisms which can make us really sick. Remember that book, The Hot Zone by Richard Preston? Apparently, the bottom of our purses is like a chapter from that book. You put your purse down, it picks up E. coli or something else equally awful, then your purse becomes a "subway for germs" as it carries the little nasties from location to location.
Women rarely go anywhere without a purse, which means that if a woman enters a place full of germs, so does her bag. That could mean she ends up carrying around microbes that could make her sick all day long. Microbiologist Chuck Gerba researches where organisms that make us sick lurk and lately he says he has found that germs gather on the outside of a woman's purse, especially on the bottom. "We found fecal bacteria you normally find on the floor of restroom," he said. "We found bacteria that can cause skin infections on the bottom of purses. What's more amazing is the large numbers we find on the bottom of purses, which indicates that they can be picking up a lot of other germs like cold viruses or viruses that cause diarrhea."

Using a hand-held germ meter, Gerba demonstrated how much bacteria can grow on a woman's purse for ABC News, with results that ranged from scary to downright terrifying. Health experts worry when the meter reads over 200, which means thousands of bacteria are present. He found thousands of germs on one woman's purse. She bought her bag about a month ago and Gerba's measurements showed her purse also carried thousands of germs. ABC News is not naming the women who participated in order to protect their identities. "I'll probably just get a new one," she said.

Yet another woman has been carrying a handbag around for years and Gerba said that he found "hundreds of thousands of germs on the surface." Gerba found about half a million bacteria on the bottom of one woman's large bag. Each time ABC News and Gerba ran an instant field test and later a lab test on swabs from the outside bottom of 10 women's purses, every single one had at least some bacteria, most had tens of thousands and a few were saturated with millions. One even had 6.7 million bacteria. Half of the bags tested positive for coliform bacteria, which indicated the possible presence of human or animal waste.

*****

"It matters because you can move germs that can cause illness from one location to another," he said. "You can later touch that purse and get them on your hands, or you could put your purse near a food preparation area and transfer germs to areas you may touch during food preparation." Some women argued that they do not lick the bottom of their purses, so they should not be in danger of getting sick, but it is very easy to unknowingly transfer germs. For example, whatever touched the bottom of your purse touches you when you grab it. If you eat a sandwich soon after that, the germs go right into your mouth. "The purses are really becoming subways for micro organisms," Gerba said. "They're being transferred from one location to another. So it's just like germ 'public transportation.' I'm afraid to touch them. You know, I know too much. I'll never become a purse snatcher, believe me."
Ok, we are now totally freaked out. So, what are you supposed to do -- use alcohol wipes on your Marc Jacobs leather handbag? Not in this lifetime, honey. Although, we think our Prada microfiber could stand it...maybe. We never put our purse on the floor -- ever. And we never let it near small children (which is not an easy feat, believe us).

Thanks a lot, ABC News. Now we'll always think of our purses as little "subways for germs."

Heatherette, Lydia Hearst and a Depressed Britney Spears

Photo of Lydia Hearst modeling Heatherette designs in Fashion WeekOne of the shows that had the biggest buzz -- not to mention the best after party -- at New York Fashion week was the Heatherette show. Heatherette loves to shock, sending male models down the runway with chaps, but no underwear, for example (it's not a look most men are likely to embrace anytime soon).

Model and Hearst heiress Lydia Hearst was the lead model for the show, and traipsed down the runway as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, sporting the new Lydia Puma bag in pink. The bag, which was co-designed with Hearst's long time friends, Richie Rich and Traver Rains of Heatherette, is inspired by Lydia and is a luxurious, custom version of the brand's French 77 Racket Bag.

"Anyone who knows me, knows my obsession with handbags. I fell in love with the Puma bag the minute I saw it and during New York Fashion Week, having the right bag is an absolute necessity," said Lydia Hearst. "Puma is giving me the opportunity to see behind the curtain into the design process, and it's been a fun experience to work with Puma and my friends at Heatherette."

The Puma Lydia Bag by Heatherette comes in three colors: "Delicate," "Night" and "Wild." Only 100 bags will be made, with most bags given to personal friends of Hearst. A very limited number of bags will be available exclusively at The Puma Black Stores in New York City's Meatpacking District and Tokyo beginning in May.

Everyone wanted one of the Puma bags, but because they only made 100 of them many people were disappointed. And, according to Rush and Molloy, Lydia Hearst turned down Britney Spears' request for one of the bags, essentially saying that Britney is trash and that the bags should go to women who make a difference in the world.
The hard-partying pop tart asked for a purse at the Heatherette show Tuesday, but a fashion source tells us that heiress-model Lydia Hearst turned her down - and it may be because she thinks Spears isn't a good role model. The singer had wanted to be presented with the pocketbook backstage and promised to carry it to her front-row seat at Heatherette, where she would be photographed with the coveted clutch, the source claims.

But after Hearst - who had only 100 of the PUMA bags she designed with Heatherette's Richie Rich and Traver Rains - politely declined her "offer," Spears was a no-show. Leslie Sloane Zelnick, the singer's spokeswoman, told us: "It's not true."

Hearst told us: "I'm only giving the bag to accomplished young women who are doing something positive to affect the world around them. They are women I look up to and respect, like Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker and Anne Hathaway. They share the same high standards of giving back to the communities in which they live."
Meow. No doubt it was this final humiliation that drove Britney into rehab -- but only for 24 hours. Nothing like being denied an It Bag to depress a girl.

Hiding Those Luxury Purchases From Hubby

The New York Times reports on the growing trend of women paying cash for luxury goods so that a spouse or partner won't know how much they're spending. Major luxury retailers, such as Louis Vuitton, have reported a surge in women eschewing credit cards and paying with cash.
Women cite a variety of reasons. Some, like Ms. Azizian, hope to head off an argument with a penny-pinching husband or boyfriend. Others feel guilty spending lavishly on themselves, and so they prefer to pay with cash, which is more easily forgotten than a monthly reckoning. A handful say they simply feel a sense of freedom from pulling the wool over their husbands' eyes.

While hard data is difficult to come by, the number of women paying in cash for designer goods has increased in the last several years, according to retail analysts and interviews with 10 upscale boutique owners nationwide and employees for chains like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. "Women buying luxury goods in cash is a fast-growing phenomenon," said Marshal Cohen, an analyst for NPD Group, a market research firm that conducts 45,000 online interviews about consumer habits each week. Mr. Cohen, who interviews as many as 100 shoppers weekly, said women reported paying with cash to disguise purchases as low as $150 and as much as $10,000. "Their answer to why they're doing this is always the same," he said. "Their husbands or boyfriends don't identify with the need to own such pricey items, and cash shopping affords them independence."

Howard Davidowitz, who has studied consumer habits firsthand for decades, said that in the last three years he has seen more cash purchases at luxury boutiques like Louis Vuitton and semiluxury chains like Coach. Mr. Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, a retail consulting firm, suspects now that $2,000 handbags and $700 shoes are commonplace, more women pay in fresh bills from the A.T.M. to cover their tracks.

*****

"Women have this fear about their spouse's reaction to their shopping bills," said Amy DiFrisco, who was a witness to cash buying as a personal shopper at Bergdorf Goodman for nearly a decade. "Cash lets them avoid that confrontation." As the owner of a clothing boutique, Two Blondes, on the Upper East Side, she continues to see the cash habit. "It was surprising at first, but now it's no big deal," she said.

*****

Men certainly aren't above treating themselves. But the difference, psychologists say, is that men are more likely to be open about buying an iPod or a $2,500 case of 2003 Château Pavie for their wine cellar, even if it leads to an argument. "In my experience, when men make money, they assume it is theirs," Dr. Potash said. "Women, even if they earn their own money, sometimes feel compelled to ask permission to buy things."
We'd stay and discuss this more but we've got to hit the ATM before Bergdorf's closes.

Scarlett and Louis For Spring

Photo of Scarlett Johansson in Louis Vuitton Spring 2007 CampaignThe new photos for the Louis Vuitton Spring 2007 campaign starring Scarlett Johansson are out and we love them. They are so retro and fun. LV said it was going for an 18th century fêtes galantes look and that she's on a swing. But we're not really feeling a Fragonard The Swing vibe here. Instead, we expect Fred Astaire to tap dance out on board the yacht at any moment. Then, Scarlett can purse those lips and dance around the deck with him. Ok, so we love old musicals and have seen every one like a million times. So sue us. But we see 30's here, not 1700's with "a dash of street style."

Whatever century they were going for in the ads, Louis Vuitton has a real problem. Scarlett really looks fabulous in any kind of period costume -- just watch her in The Prestige, for example. With those red lips and the Shirley Temple hair and the lingerie-inspired ensembles, no one -- and we mean no one -- is looking at the handbags.

The Pain of a Fabulous Handbag

Photo of You know how we love those gigantic totes and handbags that are so hot right now. Well, in the true spirit of Scrooge trying to ruin everyone's fashion fun, The New York Times gleefully reports that carrying those gargantuan handbags is causing women a host of shoulder, neck and back troubles. Business is booming for massage therapists and orthopedic surgeons, as a result.
In the last few years, bags have become ever more voluminous, and as women have fallen sway to their chunky charms, they have filled them up with necessities. These days many women are as burdened as mail carriers. As a result, reports of shoulder soreness and stiff necks are on the rise and doctors, massage therapists and chiropractors are tailoring treatments for the bag-obsessed.

"In the last year or so, I've been seeing the same kinds of issues with adult women that I'm used to seeing with kids who carry heavy backpacks on one shoulder," said Karen Erickson, a chiropractor who has a private practice on the Upper West Side, and also serves as a spokeswoman for the American Chiropractic Association. "They’re experiencing neck pain — not just while they're carrying their purses, but all the time. A lot of women even get bad headaches." "Lately, when a patient comes in complaining of these symptoms, I walk over and pick up her purse," she added. "Without fail, it weighs a ton."

For the past several months, Robin Ehrlich, the director of the Eastside Massage Therapy Center on the Upper East Side, has observed clients old and new staggering under the weight of huge purses and griping about neck pain. "It's an epidemic," Ms. Ehrlich said. "We're busier than ever before right now and big bags are the reason." A common side effect is that one shoulder becomes slightly higher than the other, she said. "A lot of women talk on their cellphones while they’re carrying these bags, which only intensifies the problem, because in addition to balancing too much weight on one side, they’re lifting the shoulder at the same time."

Ms. Ehrlich recommends weekly massages for the pain. Gentle stretching and warm baths with Epsom salts can help bag abusers, too, she said. But she would never tell a client to ditch her Mulberry Elgin tote. "It's like telling a woman, 'You cannot wear Manolo Blahniks,'" she said. "It's just not realistic."
This Kooba Paige python-embossed leather bag features antiqued brass hardware, a suede interior and shoulder straps with buckles. The size is 15.5" x 13" x 8.5". It retails for $675 at Eluxury.com. It's guaranteed to throw out your left shoulder and look fabulous while doing so. Oh, toughen up. You know that this bag is actually small compared to what we normally carry. You have to suffer for beauty, you know. So carry the Kooba and then work your way up to one of the really impressive bags -- like a really large Louis Vuitton tote. Fully loaded, those bags weigh as much as a fully-packed suitcase.

The Future Is Bright For Michael Kors

Photo of Michael KorsIn a slightly snarky piece, Slate wants to know: is Michael Kors really any good as a designer? The four million people who watch him as a judge on Project Runway absolutely love him. And the show has made him more famous than Marc Jacobs, which is saying something. But will his renewed popularity translate into success for his new global venture?
Kors' 25-year-old company is counting on his unprecedented visibility to kick-start its ambitious plans for expansion. The question is whether Kors' vision can keep pace with his celebrity. Kors faces challenges that eager Runway contestants can only imagine. To take on profitable giants like Ralph Lauren, Kors must devise a look that seems essential and current. Today, Kors makes uncomplicated, classy sportswear—the industry term for coordinating blazers, pants, shirts, skirts, and knits—and to succeed financially and creatively, he must find an inventive way to make these classics new, as other great American designers have.

*****

In the absence of much choice, Kors' many die-hard customers—well-heeled women who work and well-heeled women who don't, but want to convey the efficient independence of those who do—rely on his easy way with chic. But in order to expand the business, the company must attract a larger pool of clients. In 2003, industry veterans Silas Chou and Lawrence Stroll bought a controlling interest in the Michael Kors brand, and in August they announced plans to open 100 stores worldwide. The company is banking on a cross-merchandising strategy aimed at drawing big spenders and budget-conscious shoppers into the same stores. Each will sell clothes at several price points: The Collection—or runway—label will hang alongside two accessibly priced "diffusion" labels: Kors Michael Kors at the "bridge" price and Michael Michael Kors at the lower tier. The plan also calls for expansion of the men's offerings and the potentially lucrative accessory collections.

The partners clearly mean business: Company President John Idol spoke of the brand's $1 billion potential. But it's not clear that Kors' newfound TV stardom will make this effort more successful than earlier, failed strategies.
Never underestimate the power of celebrity to help jump start a new business. Not to mention the fact that Kors has real talent. And if Heidi Klum will model some of the clothes, so much the better.

And speaking of Michael Kors, he is offering free shipping for items ordered through his website, MichaelKors.com by using promo code MKGIFTS. The promotion runs through December 10, 2006 and fulfillment is through Neiman Marcus. This would be a great time to pick up a luscious leather handbag. As a gift, of course. It's certainly not for us. Ahem.

Luxury Gifts For Her: Dior Cannage Shopper

Photo of Christian Dior Cannage Shopper What a lovely holiday gift this would make: the Dior Cannage Large Shopper in black. Made of quilted lambskin leather, the handbag features tonal cannage pattern embroidery, brass hardware and a magnetic snap closure. The dimensions are 15.5"x 12.25" x 5". The interior has a zippered pocket, a pouch pocket and a cell phone pocket. The shoulder straps have a 8.5" drop.

The size is a good one: it's large, but it's still structured enough that it can go with either a suit or jeans and a cute sweater and boots. Only a man could buy this as a gift, however. Because any woman worth her salt would buy it as a gift, then realize that she simply had to keep it for herself. The bag retails for $1,370.00 here.

The Handbags of Horror

Photo of handbags and the horror movies that inspired them Those naughty folks over at Radar Online have done a features called Horrifying Handbags, in which they show a number of fall designer handbags next to the character from the horror film that Radar believes they were inspired by. First up is the Ingrid Patchwork Hobo by Isabella Fiore, which Radar likens to the infamous Chucky the horrible doll who has terrorized moviegoers for years.
Note the gaudy colors. The diagonal zipperish scars. The carroty tufts and deceptive "playful" quality. Do not leave this purse alone with your son! Unless you're tired of raising him and would find his death convenient.
Isabelle Fiore gets slammed by Radar again for her "lizardy monstrosity."
The ancient amphibian-freak from 1954's Creature From the Black Lagoon boasts "centuries of passion pent up in his savage heart." Though equally repellent to the touch, this Isabelle Fiore bag ($650) has little to recommend it beyond a "zip-top" and two unsavory pom-poms. Furthermore, the Creature only lashes out in self-defense while the Charm Hobo spent months in a dark basement plotting—actually, the less said about the Charm Hobo the better. We don't want to encourage any more copycat school shootings.
Andrew Marc and Miu Miu also get their share of withering criticism. We're afraid that we'll never look at a Isabella Fiore bag in quite the same way.
