Comme Des Garcons' Beatles Bags
The first image of a bag from the Beatles collection designed by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons has been unveiled. The New York Times reports that the apples on the bag pay homage to Apple Corps, the company that controls the licensing of the Beatles likeness and music. The Apple Corps green apple logo was also used for the design of the Beatles USB device. The Times says the polka dots on the bag are a favorite of designer Rei Kawakubo.
"I want to develop the 'Beatles by CDG' collection in a strong conceptual way," said Ms. Kawakubo through an interpreter. "Instead of making many unnecessary items that may come to resemble a Beatles souvenir shop, I think it is better to concentrate on one strong idea."
The Beatles by CDG collection will include bags, shirts and t-shirts. It will go on sale November 27th at Comme des Garcons' Tokyo and London stores and expand internationally next year. The bags will costs around $530, shirts around $367 and t-shirts about $117.

Alexander Wang's Rocco Bag Sells Out Quickly at Barneys
Alexander Wang wrote a report for Style.com about how quickly his Rocco bag sold out at Barneys. The Rocco bag already had a waiting list of 400 before it went on sale.
When I got to Barneys, I was welcomed with the news that our Rocco bag had a waiting list of 400-plus. By day's end, their entire Spring 2010 handbag order sold out with pre-buys-and that's before it will even hit the floor. Yikes! Good news, but now we're going to have to figure out how to produce more bags so our section won't be empty come January.
Barneys' listing of Alexander Wang handbags can be found here but there is not Rocco handbag among them. It certainly sounds like he needs to find a way to increase production.

Victoria Beckham to Expand Into Handbags and Shoes
Marie Claire UK reports that Victoria Beckham plans to expand into handbags and shoes after finding success with her dresses.
Posh is though to be fed up of being a 'walking advert' for other designers, who benefit from increased sales whenever she is pictured with one of their pieces.
A close friend of the stylista told the sun: 'Victoria is fed up of promoting other brands. If she wears Hermes or Christian Louboutin, people go and buy it.
'She thought, 'why can't I do this with my own line?'' the insider continued. 'Her current collection has gone down a storm across the celebrity world. If this is repeated with her line of shoes, the range would be worth an absolute fortune.'
It is true that the fashion and gossip blogs and tabloids report on what kind of handbag Posh is carrying and what designer brand of shoes she is wearing. This does generate publicity for the designers. No time frame has been reported for the planned launch of Posh's handbags or shoes.

Louis Vuitton Sets its Sights on Lebanon and Mongolia
Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, continues his quest for global luxury handbag domination. Louis Vuitton is opening new stores in Lebanon and Mongolia. Yves Carcelle chatted with the press at the opening of LVMH's first "global store" in Dubai. He said that the company is not planning on closing any stores in the next year, nor has it cut its investment in new stores.
"Sometimes in our industry there is a tendency to follow your ego and sometimes open stores where you don't have the market, or stores too big for your potential -- we never do that," Carcelle said. "When we open a big store, we know that there is a market, we know the financials. So we never have to close a store for economic reasons."
*****
The company has opened three stores in Dubai since 1997, and plans to double the size of its outlet in the city's Mall of the Emirates, Carcelle said. Its global store is in Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping centre, which opened last year.
"Dubai is a very dynamic city," he said. "At the end of the day, when it comes to the crisis, the client finds the situation of retail in Dubai very good."
*****
Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, will start a visit to the United Arab Emirates tomorrow.
Dubai we understand. Lebanon makes sense. But Mongolia? The Age reports that the Louis Vuitton store has already opened in Ulaanbaatar, which contrasts oddly with all the Soviet-era communist style buildings. The city already has a BMW dealership, a Mercedes Benz dealership and a Dior boutique and is home to one million people. Luxury stores are thriving. But many people still live in yurts and 30% of the population lives below the poverty level. Whatever would Ghengis Khan have thought?

LVMH Wins Huge Victory in Fake Handbag Lawsuit
WWD reports that LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton has won a huge jury verdict against two internet service providers who continued to host counterfeit handbag sites after being repeatedly warned by LVMH's attorneys that websites on their servers were breaking the law.
A federal jury in San Jose awarded a whopping $32.4 million verdict against Akanoc Solutions Inc. and Managed Solutions Group Inc., and Steven Chen, manager of the two firms. The jury said that the two companies were liable for contributory trademark and copyright infringement.
LVMH filed its suit in 2007. In an amended complaint filed in July 2008, the firm alleged Akanoc and Managed Solutions hosted more than 75 commercial Web sites with names like LVBagz.com and Louivuittonbagz.com that offered counterfeit LVMH wares to Internet shoppers.
The luxury brand said it had repeatedly warned the Fremont, Calif.-based Web hosts that sites on their servers sold counterfeit merchandise, but that the two firms continued to allow the sites to function.
"Louis Vuitton had given the defendants very specific notice of the infringing activity and it hadn't changed," said attorney Andy Coombs, who argued the case for the luxury house in the two-week trial.
A lawyer for Akanoc, Managed Solutions and Chen did not return a call seeking comment.
The judge has not yet ruled on LVMH's request for an injunction which would stop the defendants from further contributing to counterfeit sales. In other words, LVMH wants the court to order that the company stop hosting websites that sell fake handbags. This is a huge win for LVMH, which will almost certainly be appealed immediately. Luxury goods firms are really cracking down on the huge network of websites that sell fake handbags.

LVMH Awarded $400,000 in Trademark Infringement Case
A federal judge has awarded
LVMH more than $400,000 in damages in a trademark case that had dragged on for five years. The trademark they were fighting over is the one for Louis Vuitton's classic Epi Leather. LVMH sued Carducci Leather for selling counterfeit epi leather handbags. The companies settled the case in 2006, but then LVMH added another defendant, Bonini Italian Handbags Inc., the supplier of the fake bags.
According to court documents, Bonini never answered the allegations and the court eventually entered a default judgment against the company.
Bonini could not be reached for comment Friday.
In a July report on the case, Magistrate Judge Frank Maas wrote because of Bonini's refusal to participate in the case, it was impossible to determine the scope of its counterfeiting operation.
As such, the judge recommended that Louis Vuitton be awarded $100,000 in damages per trademark infringed, or $400,000, as well as $5,568.14 in attorneys' fees and costs.
Judge John Keenan agreed with those recommendations and closed the case.
Now all LVMH has to do is collect its damages, which may not be so easy.

Victoria Beckham May Launch Handbag Line
Marie Claire reports that Victoria Beckham is rumored to be looking to launching a handbag line after her very successful line of dresses.
The word on the style grapevine is that Mrs B has set her sights on the world of accessories, and is specifically hoping to branch out into handbags.
The move would seem a natural one for the fashionista, who is well known for her extensive array of Hermès bags, and she's reportedly already started meeting with designers, who will be able to help her create the collection.
A source snitched to The London Paper, 'Victoria is looking for designers from the top houses to help her put together a high end collection that will rival her favourite brands, like Louis Vuitton and Dior. She wants the range to be classic but contemporary.'
Victoria Beckham has been photographed many times carrying Hermes Birkin bags. She is said to have a valuable collection of the bags. This is a tough time to be expanding into fashion accessories but it is also a logical step following the success with her dresses. You can see some of Posh's 2009 Ready to Wear collection here and here.
