The Halloween Hangover
Just about everyone we've talked to today has a Halloween Hangover. Some are because of alcohol, but most of the hangovers we've encountered are due to too much sugar coupled with Congress' stupidity which resulted in Halloween starting an hour late this year. In case you didn't notice, we were supposed to have Daylight Savings Time a week before Halloween.
It's fall, so this is the one where you get to sleep an hour later -- our favorite day of the year. But Congress, spouting some inanity about saving power, moved Daylight Savings Time a week later. That means in the Central Time Zone that sunset began around 6:30 or so and it didn't get dark until 7:00 p.m.
Since trick or treating doesn't start until sundown, everyone with small children stayed up an hour later last night. How is that going to save power? If it's darker in the morning, people will just use more lights in the morning instead of the evening. We think it was all a plot to mess with Halloween. That's it. It's the War on Halloween!
Pictured is one of the jack-o-lanterns we carved yesterday -- we know just how he feels.

What Your Choice of Halloween Candy Says About You
The Washington Post has examined the all-important issue of what kind of Halloween candy you give out to trick-or-treaters says about you. Steve Almond, the author of Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America), provided the in-depth psychological personality type treat analysis, based on....well, we're not exactly sure what he based it on. But we totally agree with his statement in his book:
"There's something incredibly liberating about a holiday that encourages children to take candy from strangers," Almond writes of Halloween in his book. Indeed. For some reason, Almond asked that we make clear that he is a "professional candyfreak, not a therapist."
Read on to find out what message you're sending to your neighbors:
Three Musketeers: Does well in groups but is somewhat pompous. Prone to fancy costumes and arcane weapons. Wears hats in public that are ill-advised.
Almond Joy: I'm going to put aside my aversion to coconut in praising these folks as happy-go-lucky.
Bit-O-Honey: They have contradictory personalities, hoping to express generosity but also having the passive-aggressive desire to damage the fillings of trick-or-treaters.
Butterfinger: Evasive, slippery, not necessarily to be trusted.
Candy Corn: Purely deluded people. They don't get that candy shouldn't attempt to imitate other food groups, particularly corn.
Good & Plenty: Optimistic, perhaps overly so. A little bit of Weimar energy. Strong advocate of gay rights; acquainted with the bitterness at the center of most lives.
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups: Generous souls. Those who understand the salty in life, as well as the sweet.
Snickers: Just going with the crowd, the safe candy choice, guaranteed to please the masses. Not ambitious, but dependable.
You can see the full chart with more analysis of your inner psyche, completely horrifying calorie counts and then vote on your favorite treat to hand out here.
A word of advice, though: whatever you do, don't give out Twizzlers. They'll peg you as one of the "Sickos. Truly demented. Plastic people living plastic lives."

Gortraits Liven Up Halloween Decor
One of the hottest Halloween decorations this year is the Goretrait. No, it's not a portrait of Nobel Prize winner Al Gore. A Gortrait is an ancestor portrait which turns into something horrific when you move the photo or look at it sideways. It's a hologram. So, that painting rebels a shocking side of of Great Uncle Cyrus: apparently he was a vampire. Or a werewolf. Or any number of odd things. Talk about your skeletons in the closet.
Pictured is the Admiral Howl Gortrait. While out on the high seas heading for Cape Horn, the Admiral made the acquaintance of a werewolf during a full moon. He made it back to port intact, but a bit hairier. You can find this Gortrait and many others at
Frightcollection.com.

Sleep With a Ghost
A haunted house can be your Halloween travel destination. Staying at a haunted house is the theme of many a horror film but the hotels listed in Historic Hotels of America have people to take care of you and feed you. The photo above it the The Crescent Hotel & Spa in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. You can read about some of the supernatural activitiy that occurs in the Crescent here. One of that haunted areas in the hotel is Room 218.
The Victorian 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa in Eureka Springs, Ark., hosts a wide variety of spirits. It is said that after the skeleton frame of hotel had been constructed in the 1880s that one of the Irish stone masons plunged to his death in what is now room 218. This room proves to be the most spiritually active room in the hotel and has attracted television film crews for decades because of the quantity and quality of the sightings reported. Throughout the history of the hotel, employees have referred to this entity at "Michael," a classified poltergeist due to the nature of the unexplained activity. Guests have witnessed hands coming out of the bathroom mirror, cries of a falling man in the ceiling, the door opening then slamming shut, unable to be opened again. The intrigue of this activity had drawn guests to specifically request room 218 for the chance of experiencing something.
You can read about other hauntings at historic hotels from the Historic Hotels of America here and here. For other directories of haunted hotels and towns try here, here, here, here and here.

Popular Pet Costumes in 2007
There will be lots of furry devils, witches and pumpkins in people's homes on October 31st. A National Retail Federation (NRF) study has found that 7.4 million households will be dressing up a pet for Halloween this year.
According to the National Retail Federation's 2007 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, an estimated one in ten celebrants (11.0%), or 7.4 million households, plan on donning their beloved pet in some sort of costume this year.
Devils (12.0%) and pumpkins (9.2%) top the list of pet costumes, with witches (4.5%), princesses (3.8%) and angels (3.3%) rounding out the top five.
"Many consumers who own pets think of them as family members," said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "Pet owners will go all out to include dogs, cats and other critters in Halloween festivities, including trick-or-treating, handing out candy or even celebrating at a friend or family members' house."
Here is the list of the most popular pet costumes according to the study.

Study Indicates Halloween Spending Will Climb This Year
Retailers are excited because they expect you will be spending lots of money on Halloween costumes, cards, decorations and other goodies this year. The National Retail Federation (NRF) commissioned a study by BigResearch to see how much people would be spending and what they would be doing. They found that spending will rise with the average person planning to spend $64.82 on the holiday compared to $59.06 one year ago. Here is what BigResearch found people will be spending money on.
Halloween party-goers are bobbing for more than just apples. They'll also be on the lookout for candy, costumes and decorations. The average person will spend $23.33 on Halloween costumes (including children's and pet's costumes), though young adults will spend far more. In fact, according to the survey, 18-24 year-olds plan to be the most festive, spending $34.06 on costumes, nearly twice as much as they plan to spend on candy ($19.65). According to the survey, average spending will rise in all categories, including candy ($19.84, decorations ($17.73) and greeting cards ($3.92).
According to the study the most popular activity people have planned is handing out candy (72.9%) -- not really a surprise. Carving pumpkins (43.3%), decorating (47.8%) and attending parties (28.3%) were also popular with Halloween revelers.
The most popular activity on Halloween this year will be handing out candy, with nearly three-fourths (72.9%) of consumers planning to stay home to hand out treats. Other popular activities will include pumpkin carving (43.3%), decorating a home and/or yard (47.8%), and throwing or attending a Halloween party (28.3%).
Other Halloween activities listed in the study included take children trick-or-treating (33.1%), dress in costume (33.8%) and visit a haunted house (17.8%). You can find some resources for finding Halloween costumes and decorations here on ShoppersShop.com.

Creepy New Robot Toy From WowWee
The New York Times describes a creepy new toy from WowWee, the company behind the popular Robosapien robot toy from 2004. The new toy is called the Roboquad. You can watch a video of the Roboquad in action here. The Times says the Roboquad will react to events in the room.
As with WowWee's Robosapien, the infrared sensors play a crucial role: they help the robot avoid obstacles and detect motion, so the robot jumps back if you wave your hand in front of its face.
You can use the remote control (which takes three of the seven batteries) to change the Roboquad's walking direction or choose combinations of 72 possible motions. Or you can simply set the robot's mood and let it react to events in the room.
As with other robotic toys, the Roboquad's novelty factor is high, but there is the risk that a child's interest will drain about as fast as the batteries. Of course, you never know when you might need to tease your dog.
Dogs may not mind playing with this toy but we think this little robot would terrify most cats. The toy isn't black or orange but it still might work well for Halloween. In the dark it might seem like a strange creature is creeping arouund your house.

The younger adults are the most likely to dress up -- 62.8% of adults aged 18-24 plan to wear costumes this year. The survey found that the witch costume is by far the most popular costume choice for adults. Other popular costume choices include pirate, vampire, cat and clown. That's the

| 2 | Pirate | 3.7% |
| 3 | Vampire | 3.7% |
| 4 | Cat | 2.6% |
| 5 | Clown | 1.8% |
| 6 | Fairy | 1.6% |
| 7 | Gypsy | 1.6% |
| 8 | Superhero | 1.6% |
| 9 | Ghost/Ghoul | 1.4% |
| 10 | Dracula | 1.3% |
| 11 | Devil | 1.2% |
| 12 | Woman of the Night | 1.1% |
| 13 | Nurse | 1.1% |
| 14 | Pumpkin | 1.1% |
| 15 | Athlete | 1.0% |
| 16 | Princess | 1.0% |
| 17 | Zombie | 1.0% |
| 18 | Angel | 0.8% |
| 19 | French Maid | 0.8% |
| 20 | Cowboy/Cowgirl | 0.7% |
Adult costumes tend to be either scary, sexy or silly. A New York Times article quotes costume merchants who say the sexier women's costumes are some of the top sellers this year.
Salacious costumes — the most visible reminder that Halloween is no longer the sole domain of children — have been around longer than plastic Grim Reaper scythes. But there has been an emergence of "ultrasexy" costumes in the last couple of years, according to Christa Getz, the purchasing director for BuyCostumes.com, which sells outfits with names like Little Bo "Peep Show" and Miss Foul Play.
"Probably over 90 to 95 percent of our female costumes have a flirty edge to them," Ms. Getz said, adding that sexy costumes are so popular the company had to break its "sexy" category into three subdivisions this year.
Heather Siegel, the vice president of HalloweenMart.com, said her company’s sexy category is among its most popular. (The two best-selling women's costumes are a low-cut skin-tight referee uniform and a pinup-girl-inspired prisoner outfit called Jail Bait.)
"Almost everybody gets dressed up really, really sexy for it," said Carrie Jean Bodner, a senior at Cornell University in Ithaca who wrote about the abundance of skimpy Halloween garb for The Cornell Daily Sun last year. "Even the girls who wouldn't dream of going to class without their pearls and pullovers."
One major problem with a sexier costume trend is when costumes meant for kids are also made to look sexy. Target recently pulled some of these youth costumes after parents complained.
Other adult costume trends include dressing up as politicians or media moguls. George W. Bush and Martha Stewart ranked high in a BizRate Research survey.
No need to count hanging chads, president George W. Bush was the clear cut winner among men in the vote for most popular choice of costumes with 47% choosing the Commander-in-Chief over two other newsworthy subjects, Mel Gibson (36%) and Tom Cruise (18%).
Females would rather dress as domestic diva Martha Stewart (54%) than heiress Paris Hilton (27%) or television personality Star Jones (19%).
Overall, the pirates trend appears to be one of the most dominant adult costume trends. The Deseret News reports that the pirates trend is boosted not just by the popularity of the recent pirates film but also because it is not difficult to dress up as a pirate.
"Pirates is one category that really has been genderless and ageless," reports Deborah Radman, public relations manager for national chain Party City. "It has a lot to do with the popularity of the movie. Kids think it's cool, and adults can dress up fairly easily."
In a pinch, a procrastinator could throw on a white shirt, grab a bandanna, eye patch and plastic sword - all easy to find this time of year - and be ready to go, she suggests.
The pirate costume is the procrastinator's friend this year. A Chicago Sun-Times article says the Capt. Jack Sparrow costume is a runaway favorite in Chicago. They article also lists a wide range of costumes that are popular this year including historical figures like Caesar and Cleopatra; the Twister board game costume; the Grim Reaper; religious costumes like monks and priests; 70s and retro costumes and athlete costumes like cheerleaders and football players.

Halloween Costumes For Baby
Le Top has the cutest Halloween costumes for infants this year. Our favorite is the green dragon, but the bunny comes in a close second. But the Giraffe and the Dalmation costumes are also just darling. The costumes are soft, hooded and cover baby completely so he can ride along for some trick or treat fun on Halloween night. The costumes feature a front zipper and snaps between the legs for easy, on the go diaper changes.
The costumes are available at Nordstrom.com and retail for $42.00 each.

Soft Claws For Kitty
We adore cats, but sometimes the little darlings make us a tad peeved when they decide to exercise their claws on some expensive furniture -- or a lovely rug. We don't hold with de-clawing and we're not thrilled with the idea of spraying that repellant stuff everywhere. Then a vet told us about Soft Claws.
Soft claws are soft rubber claws that fit over your cat's claws. You glue them on and the cat never knows they're there. Each set lasts between 4 to 6 weeks, although we've heard from people who say they last longer. Each kit contains
contains 40 nail caps, six applicators tips, two tubes of adhesive, and complete instructions. They come in small, medium and large and are for cats over three weeks old -- we wouldn't use them on kittens, by the way.
The claws come in clear, red, blue and pink. And for Halloween, they've done a set in black and orange, which would look great on a black cat.
They retail for $19.99 at
DrsFosterandSmith.com.
Oh, and yes -- this is for only recommended for pet owners who enjoy doing pet manicures and who have lots of patience. And if you have one of those cats who hates you touching his paws, this is probably not the way to go.

The Peeps are Ready for Halloween
Just Born is making its popular Peeps candies for Halloween. The company says this is its second most popular holiday. Just Born's yellow Peeps are best known for their annual Easter appearance. The photograph on the right shows Just Born's pumpkin Peeps being made at the factory. Just Born also has a few recipes on its website for Halloween. They are also selling a Halloween decorating kit for Peeps.
Peeps are not the only sweets being prepared for Halloween. Susan Fussell, director of communications with the National Confectioners Association, told John D. Homan at the Southern Illinosian that 9 billion pieces of candy corn are made each Halloween.
Susan Fussell, director of communications with the National Confectioners Association, said that when people think of Halloween, they naturally think of Trick or Treating and the purchase of all varieties of candy.
"The Halloween season has been No. 1 in candy sales for a number of years now," Fussell said. "It's pretty safe to say that sales have increased between 1 and 3 percent each year. Themed candies are a large part of the sales. Would you believe that more than nine billion pieces of candy corn are made each year. And the candies that are most popular at Halloween are usually popular year 'round with candy bars, gum and licorice.
"Novelty candies are also popular - candies that include toys that spin, cackle and make any kind of noise. Baby Bottle Pops, for example, are popular again this Halloween. The bottle pop is orange with black sugar powder, which dyes your tongue black. The more gruesome, the better. Kids are crazy about gross out candies because their parents don't like them."
For the more elaborate Halloween treat there is also Godiva's Lucky the cat. Hopefully, there will be lots of toothbrushing to go along with all this candy consumption. An article from Healthy Wealthy nWise lists some non-candy alternatives like bags of pretzels, rubber spiders and helium balloons.

Godiva Gets Lucky
Now you could blow your entire daily calorie allotment on those tiny Snickers bars during Halloween (so stressful answering the door all night...what's a girl to do but take some fortifying nibbles of chocolate to keep her going?) But think -- if you're going to splurge on Halloween, why not have a fabulous Godiva chocolate? We like Lucky the cat, which is made of pure chocolate. He retails for $10 at your local Godiva retailer or at Godiva.com. We won't tell.
If, on the other hand, your plans involve dressing up in a trampy costume and partaking of the demon rum, you could always have Lucky waiting for you at home to cap off your night of wild abandon. Nothing says "welcome home, party girl" like Godiva chocolate, we always say.

Princess Remains Top Halloween Costume
A study conducted for The National Retail Federation's (NRF) by BIGresearch has found that the princess is by far the most popular Halloween costume for kids for the second year in a row. 11.5% of kids surveyed said they planned to dress up as a princess. That figure doesn't include another 3.1% of children who plan to dress up as a Disney princess. Other popular costume choices include pirates, witches and Spider-Man. Ghost Pumpkins: White is the New Orange
CNN has a news story about the growing trend towards white pumpkins which are also known as ghost pumpkins.
The albinos are called ghost pumpkins, snowballs, luminas or Caspers -- presumably a reference to the friendly ghost. And the ones about the size of a baseball? Baby Boos.
White pumpkins are slightly more expensive than their orange cousins, but parents and party planners say they're more ghoulish and offer a better canvas for drawing or painting jack-o'-lantern faces.
Direct Gardening has the seeds if you want to grow your own white pumpkins for Halloween 2006. If you want a white pumpkin this year you will need to check with your local grocery stores or with pumpkin patches in your area.
White pumpkins -- simply another variety of the autumn favorite -- have been around for a while, but what was once a curiosity at farmers markets is now making the scene at larger groceries and pumpkin patches.
Gensler Gardens, a family farm near Rockford, grew 6,000 white pumpkins this year because the 1,000 it cultivated last year were such a hit. But more than a week before Halloween, all 6,000 had been sold, and the Genslers will probably grow 20,000 next year, Scott Gensler said.
