Wiis Tough To Find at Retail Price

Wii Product LineThe Wii is a hot game console from Nintendo. The unique aspect of the Wii is its controller that allows a player's motion to control movement in the game. You swing the Wii controller and you swing a racket or baseball bat in a Wii game. This concept has the Wii appealing to players all of ages. Even seniors are actively playing the game. Here's a video that shows seniors in a Wii bowling playoff. The Wii is a lot of fun but lately trying to find one can cause a lot of frustration.

The problem for those seeking a Wii this holiday season is that have become extremely difficult to find - at least at the retail price of $250. The New York Times says this is the second straight year the Wii has had holiday supply problems and it is costing Nintendo millions. The interest in the gaming console from all ages has a lot to do with the Wii's consistent demand.
Shoppers across the country have similar stories. With the Wii, Nintendo has created a phenomenon that recalls crazes of Christmases past: Cabbage Patch dolls, Furby, Tickle Me Elmo. But in this case it is happening for a second consecutive holiday season. Nintendo has been unable to keep up with demand, costing it hundreds of millions of dollars in potential sales.

The Wii, with an unusual remote control that players wave to manipulate action on the screen, has attracted a broad, unconventional following - from young children to mothers and even the elderly. It has put to shame the frenzy over another much-hyped gadget, the iPhone, which prompted long lines at its debut in June but was readily available on store shelves the next day.

The demand for the console has prompted creative buying strategies, early-morning camp outs and recrimination against Nintendo for failing to produce enough machines a full year after the product's release.

Jim Silver, editor in chief of Toy Wishes magazine and an industry analyst for 24 years, said it was unusual for an in-demand product to remain so hard to find for so long. The must-have toys of other holiday seasons, like Furby, stayed popular into a second year but became easily available.

"It's pretty amazing," Mr. Silver said. "By a year later with hot items, inventory usually catches up."

The Wii is more expensive than those other toys - $250 - and is attracting not just eager-to-please parents but also adults like Ms. Beattie who want it just for themselves. "I know 6-year-olds that love it and 50-year-olds that love it," Mr. Silver said.
The Times says 981,000 Wiis were sold in the United States in November putting it well ahead of competing consoles. Microsoft sold 770,000 Xbox 360s and Sony sold 466,000 PlayStation 3s during November.

CNET reports that some Wiis will be in stores again on the 20th and 21st but most of them will probably be sold to people willing to camp out in front of the stores.
According to Fils-Aime, Wiis will be available next week at all major retailers. If past patterns are any indication, however, that "availability" will be limited to shoppers willing to camp out before stores open on Sunday or Monday morning. Since Christmas is just two weeks away, you're probably still going to have some difficulty finding a Wii.
CNET also notes that GameStop is offering Wii rainchecks if you can wait just a little bit longer for your Wii - until after the Christmas rush. You will need to be at a GameStop store on the 20th or 21st to get your Wii raincheck for January.
While that seems to be the biggest hope for Christmas Wiis, Reggie also announced a raincheck program in conjunction with GamesStop to get more Wiis out to shoppers in January. Even if Wiis are out of stock, on December 20 and 21, consumers will be able to purchase them for January.

On those two days, if you put down the full retail price of the Wii at a GameStop, you'll receive a raincheck guaranteeing you a Wii in January. The rainchecks will be available only as supplies last, but Fils-Aime said GameStop has "many tens of thousands" of rainchecks available across its 3,000+ stores. Perhaps the Wii-hungry will be camping out next week to get a raincheck for a Wii next month. We'll find out by next Friday.
That might work if you have patient gift recipients. If you have to have the Wii this holiday season you are going to have to pay more than the retail price of $250. Places to look include eBay and third party sellers on Amazon.com.

Third party sellers here on Amazon.com are selling the Wii at over twice retail. Prices for new Wiis on Amazon.com range from $509 to $1,000+.

There are thousands of Wiis listed for auction on eBay.com. There are some outrageous prices in the $2,500+ range. There are also more reasonable prices auctions with prices in the $350 to $500 range. If you don't want to bid look for a listing with a Buy It Now option. You can see some of the Wii consoles up for sale on eBay here.

Be sure to look closely at the shipping method being offered by any third party seller if you are trying to have the Wii you buy delivered in time for Christmas.

Halo 3 Is Here

Screenshot from Halo 3Halo 3 is finally here. Microsoft's new release is the current must-have for serious gamers. It's expected to have blockbuster sales.
The Halo series, set in a future when humanity is battling a hostile alien race, has sold more than 14.8 million copies since its debut in 2001, making it one of the most successful game franchises. The last major game in the series, Halo 2, set a record in 2004 for first-day sales of any entertainment product, generating more than $125 million in the United States in its first 24 hours. Microsoft and major game retailers expect to surpass that mark beginning at midnight tomorrow, when more than 10,000 stores across the country will open to sell Halo 3. In London, authorities have banned official "midnight madness" events amid fears of unruly crowds.

As early as July more than 1 million consumers had ordered the game, which will be available in three versions, costing $60, $70 and $130. (The top version comes with a space helmet inspired by Halo 3.) The game will ship in 17 languages. "There is no question the Halo 3 launch is the biggest event of the year in video games, and for a lot of people it will be the biggest entertainment event of the year, period," said Andy McNamara, editor in chief of the magazine Game Informer. "Halo just has its tendrils into the imagination of a whole generation. Frankly, I don't know if Microsoft would even be in the game business today if it weren't for Halo."

Halo 3 is widely expected to be the top-selling game of the year for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, the sole machine on which the game can be run. Halo 3 is also expected to drive users toward the company's Xbox Live Internet service. The only other release that had been expected to compete with Halo 3 this coming holiday season was Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto IV, often called G.T.A., but that game was recently delayed until next year. "Halo 3 is the drive title for Xbox 360 to bring it to the next level, and given the fact that G.T.A. slipped into next year, Halo 3 is really in a league of its own this year," said Ben Schachter, an Internet and video-game analyst at UBS Securities. "Certain games, like Halo, have a special place, and they can help drive the entire industry forward."

*****

"People have been talking about video games becoming a bona fide mainstream entertainment medium, and you really see that playing out with Halo," said Neal Tiles, president of G4, which will begin its coverage in New Zealand, where the game will first arrive. "They're looking at $150 million in the first day, which is bigger than any movie has done. Culturally, it's at least as big as any film opening or TV premiere or book or Broadway opening, and probably bigger."
And if you really want to surprise your gaming-mad loved one, you simply have to get him/her a Halo 3 Limited Edition Xbox 360. Or you could just keep it for yourself. That's what we tend to do when we buy someone a particularly cool gift. We're selfish that way.

Update: You can find Halo 3 review links and resources here.

  • Barbie's Virtual World

Images from Barbie's Virtual WorldIt was bound to happen sooner or later. Barbie is going virtual reality. Mattel just unveiled Barbie Girls, a hybrid play experience that blends fashion, music and an online virtual world. Launching this week, Barbie Girls first comes to life via www.BarbieGirls.com, which Mattel bills as "the first global, virtual online world designed exclusively for girls." At BarbieGirls.com girls can create their own virtual character, design their own room, shop at the mall, play games, hang out and chat live with other girls. In July, Barbie Girls emerges into the real world with a handheld, 4 1/2" portable device that serves as a music player and fashion statement-in-one, while also unlocking new content within BarbieGirls.com.

"The Barbie Girls experience is like no other because girls are in control at every level," said Chuck Scothon, general manager and senior vice president, Girls, Mattel Brands. "We set out to create a platform that is truly revolutionary to transform how girls interact with music, fashion and the online world. Barbie Girls is the result of listening to what girls want, researching how they play and fusing it with the right technology to deliver a completely new experience."

The world has many similarities to Second Life: when a girl registers on the site, she can create a personalized virtual character, design her own room, shop with B Bucks (virtual money) that she earns, play games, watch videos and have real-time chats with other girls. Girls can create their own, highly-personalized virtual characters by choosing from 2.64 quadrillion character combinations of fashions and accessories, as well as stylish faces, expressions and hairstyles. Personalization also extends to each girl's room where more than 4.6 quintillion combinations of room colors, floors, backgrounds and furniture are offered to suit girls' varied design styles. Customization is limitless and profiles can be changed at every log-in. Girls can then chat live with other registered girls on the site.

Mattel knows that parents are freaked out about online predators, so they have spent a lot of time addressing that issue. The site features a three-pronged safety approach that includes:
    1. Sophisticated word filters to keep chat secure, prevent the exchange of personal information (e.g. phone numbers, names, etc.) and block inappropriate, hurtful or offensive language.
    2. Easy-to-use safety features that give a girl the ability to lock or open her room to other characters, the ability to block users and prevent them from contacting her on the site, and the ability to report other users for inappropriate behavior.

    3. Robust moderation tools that provide BarbieGirls.com administrators with the ability to monitor chat that occurs in the environment, track and monitor reported users and ban users who attempt objectionable behavior.
Chatting in the Barbie Girls environment offers two levels of chat based on the relationship between users:

  • "B Chat" is the most common yet most restricted type of chat, and it may be conducted in a girl's room and in the public zones of the BarbieGirls.com world. With B Chat girls can only use words approved and compiled in the BarbieGirls.com database, which precludes the disclosure of personal information (e.g. real names, locations, numbers and spelled-out numbers will be blocked). The filters also prevent otherwise acceptable words that may be combined in inappropriate sequences from the site.
  • "Secret B Chat" is a private chat that only occurs in a girl's room and is only available to "best friends" - girls who both have a Barbie Girl device and who have physically connected their devices into one another's computer docking station. This allows girls to chat at a more personal level but still blocks inappropriate, obscene or threatening language.

BarbieGirls.com also gives girls a personal email device - My Mail- where they can send and receive messages of up to 500 characters with friends and best friends using the same levels of security and safety for chat. Girls can change the look of their mailbox with different skins and personalize incoming email alerts with fun ringtones and cool music.

Of course, Mattel is hoping that the girls spend lots of money using those B Bucks, so get ready for that. We think Mattel has a nightmare on its hands trying to police the chat rooms of girls and keeping out the crazies. On the other hand, it's a smart way to get girls interested in a Second Life kind of environment early.

  • Ebay Delists Virtual Property Unless Its From Second Life

Second Life ScreenshotTrading virtual property on eBay is a big no no unless you are trading virtual property from the Second Life virtual world. Trading virtual property from World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs is forbidden. Originally the eBay ban was for all virtual items but News.com reports that traders of Second Life virtual items have been thrown a life line.
eBay spokesman Hani Durzy told CNET News.com Monday that that exemption stems from the auction giant's interpretation of what Second Life is.

"If someone participates in Second Life and wants to sell something they own, we are not at this point proactively pulling those listings off the site," said Durzy. "We think there is an open question about whether Second Life should be regarded as a game."

That statement should make Second Life publisher Linden Lab very happy, as it has tried for years to hammer home the point that its virtual world is not a game. But to have that position supported by as august an institution as eBay should definitely bolster Linden Lab's argument, regardless of what other observers think.
One argument that Second Life is no longer a game is that you have news agencies, embassies and department stores like Sears setting up a virtual place inside the virtual world. More discussion of the ban on virtual goods except for those found Second Life can be found on Auctionbytes, Marketing Vox and ITWire. Also at Auctionbytes Ina Steiner speculates about the possibility of a Second Life acquisition by eBay.

If you run a "Second Life" search on eBay you will currently see over 100 items -- most of which are Lindens or Linden Dollars -- the currency traded inside the Second Life virtual world.

Is Sears Too Much Reality For Second Life?

second lifeSecond Life is an online virtual world that has been generating an enormous amount of press over the past several months. Lately some retailers have been setting up shop in the virtual world which claims to have two million members. Now Sears is setting up a store inside the virtual world.
Providing customers with the best possible shopping experience is very important for the company and it is always looking for new and exciting ways to present products and services, says Sears Holdings' senior vice president for direct commerce, Paul Miller.

'The Sears Virtual Home combines the best of virtual worlds and 3D environments so customers can experience Sears' products in a way that is closer to real life,' he said. 'Sears.com already provides innovative design functionality and this work with IBM in a virtual world is a logical extension of those initiatives.'

Eventually, the customers entering the store using a virtual in-game avatar will be able to see mock-ups of rooms, allowing them to experiment with furniture colours, sizes and layouts.
It is great that retailers are supporting the world. The 3-D modeling offered in Second Life may help consumers create mock-ups for a countertop or design a living room. The technology is still quite crude, but eventually this type of 3-D modeling will work.

But here's the problem. Isn't this really just a little too much reality for what's supposed to be a fun online game? If you are leaving reality for a virtual world where you can do anything, then anything you can imagine you can create. Don't you really want the very best products? Don't you want to wear the hippest high-end fashions, drive the hottest vehicles and own the most fabulous real estate? Do you really want to create a virtual house furnished by Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Sears and wear clothes from the Gap?

If the sky's the limit, why wouldn't you want to wear an Armani suit or a Versace dress while you sip the finest champagne? You can relax on the deck as your $50 million yacht glides across a clear purple sea while five spectacular Suns set in the distance. No doubt your personal mermaid chorus will serenade you on your journey.

Or you could go to Sears and find a virtual washer and dryer...yawn.

PS3s Going for Thousands on Ebay

PS3 60GBWe saw people hurt themselves trying to get a new Sony PlayStation 3 when they first became available at bricks-and-mortar retailers. Now people are spening a fortune on eBay to get them. Crave explains.
We reported earlier that bids for Sony PS3s had reached $9,000 this morning. By Friday afternoon bidding on eBay had jumped over $10,000 for a new, unopened 60GB unit. (Thanks to Evan J. for the tip.)

One entrepreneurial young man, asking $16,000, pleads on his seller's page, "FREE OVERNIGHT!!!! Help fund my college education!" The accompanying grainy photo of him holding his receipt and PS3 is slightly reminiscent of those ransom videos where a kidnap victim is forced to hold that day's newspaper to prove he or she is still alive. But despite the creepiness factor, we can't fault "discounts-from-philly"'s desperation for higher education. But we can if he just uses the money to get bigger tires and a paint job for his truck.
You can see all the PS3 auctions on eBay here and the PS3 60GB machine listings here. Many of the 60GB gaming machines are ending with bids over $1,000. In an earlier post we mentioned that eBay has posted special guidelines for selling PS3s on eBay. That same post also cited an expert, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, who thought eBay would end up being the top video game retailer this season. Sebastian may very well end up being correct.

Playstation 3, Gunfire and Near Riots

It was almost like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Sony's new Playstation 3 went on sale in the U.S. and near riots broke out. One person was shot. One ran into a flagpole and was injured during a melee. Some people waited outside stores for up to three days to be first in line to buy the gaming system.
With shortages resulting from production problems, many had camped out for days without knowing if they'd be going home empty-handed. At some stores, the crowds got rowdy and stampeded for the shelves, injuring a man in Wisconsin and forcing authorities to shut down a Wal-Mart store in California.

In Connecticut, two armed thugs who got wise to the PS3's high price and tried to rob a line of people waiting outside a Putnam Wal-Mart store at 3 a.m. One person who refused to give up the money was shot, state police said. In Lexington, Kentucky, four people waiting outside a Best Buy were hit by BB pellets, though none was seriously injured, according to television station WKYT, whose own reporter was hit as she interviewed buyers.

    *****

With Sony promising only 400,000 systems for the nationwide launch, the chance of disappointment was high. While retailers tried to keep expectations low, lines snaked around the block at many stores -- even those that weren't going to begin sales until later Friday. Saby Madrigal, an 18-year-old college student who worked for a month at a liquor store to save for a PS3, waited in line outside the Circuit City for 24 hours without success. Still, she vowed to keep looking. "For the work we had to do to get all the money to get the stupid system, I'm going to search every single store in town," she said. "I don't care, I'm going to get it." Some who saw long lines at the midnight launches simply went to another location, with later openings and smaller crowds. Nonetheless, about 50 people were in front of Ahmad Mustafa, 24, outside a New York Best Buy with only 34 units available.

    *****

Nathaniel Lord, who camped out for three nights at a Best Buy in West Hollywood, California, spent more than $700 on a console and game. "I thought about going home to shower first because I haven't showered in three days, but I think I'm just going to get another energy drink, log on and get started," said Lord, a recent graduate of California Institute of the Arts. Sony, which has contended with laptop battery recalls and trails rivals in key products such as music players and liquid crystal displays, is counting on the PS3 to maintain and build its market lead in consoles. Some customers were buying PS3 machines for themselves or as gifts, but many were hoping to resell them at a profit. Units were fetching several thousand dollars early Friday at the eBay Inc. auction site.
All we can say is this: when you're willing to wait outside a Best Buy for three days to buy a PS3, then you don't even shower before you playing the game, Dude, you have a serious problem with gaming addiction.

Ebay Posts Special Guidelines for New Game Consoles

PlayStation 3GameDaily BIZ has an article that quotes Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian as saying that eBay could wind up being the top video game console retailer this holiday season. With strong demand and a limited Sony PlayStation 3 supply Sebastian may end up being correct.
Over the years, it's become quite common for shoppers to purchase new consoles at launch not to play them, but specifically for the purpose of reselling them for a profit on eBay or other sites. These people are probably best likened to scalpers at the ballpark who will sell you a ticket for three times the price. Some would say it's a despicable practice, but when consumers are desperate for the latest console at launch they'll apparently pay almost anything.

"With limited supplies expected this holiday for both Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii consoles, we expect that many gamers will turn to eBay (and other online marketplaces) to locate new hardware. Already, our survey of completed auctions on ebay.com indicates that nearly 2,000 pre-ordered PS3 and Wii consoles have been resold on the marketplace to-date," commented Sebastian.

He continued, "In addition, the consoles are selling on eBay for approximately two and one half times the suggested retail price of console hardware, on average $1,500 for Sony's PS3 vs. $599 and $550 vs. $249 for Nintendo's Wii. We continue to believe that initial demand for the new hardware platforms will exceed supplies."
In expectation of the high demand for game consoles Ebay has posted the following guides for PS3 sales.
  • Only one of each console can be listed per eBay account prior to the launch of the console (PS3 is expected to be available on 11/17/06, Wii on 11/19/06).
  • The seller must only accept payment through PayPal, and have at least 50 feedback with a 98% or greater positive rating so that they qualify for PayPal Buyer Protection.
  • The pre-sale item must be listed in the 3, 5, 7 or 10-day formats, and cannot use Buy It Now.
  • The listing must include a photo of your pre-order receipt in the description.
  • We witness once again how important feedback -- especially positive feedback -- is for eBay sellers. Obviously there is going to be significant demand for the PlayStation 3 on eBay with only 400,000 units being shipped by Sony so this should result in some high prices for the PS3 on eBay over the next few weeks.

What Gifts are People Searching For?

A new study from Comscore reveals which holiday gifts consumers are searching for online. It is no surprise that the popular iPod and hard-to-find Xbox 360 have topped consumer searches. Harry Potter was also popular thanks to the release of the 6th book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, in July and the recent release of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire film which is now in theatres. Here were the most popular searches in November.

  • iPod - 6.6 million searches
  • Xbox 360 - 5.0 million searches
  • Harry Potter - 4.8 million searches
  • Star Wars - 2.5 million searches
  • Barbie - 2.1 million searches
  • PlayStation - 1.9 million searches

The above data shows searches for November according to Comscore. We expect that Narnia books and products might creep into December's top search boosted by the films strong box office debut.

  • Xbox 360 Arrives and Promptly Sells Out

The Xbox 360 was expected to be one of the most popular items of the holiday season and it has lived up to its promise. But the Xbox 360 was supposed to fun and not something that would frustrate consumers. Unfortunately, frustration is just what people are feeling as they arrive in stores only to find the Xbox 360 has already sold out. At online retailers the situation is the same. Amazon.com's Xbox 360 listing reads "out of stock" as do other online retailers have also sold out according to MSNBC.
Many stores quickly sold out. Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. and the Web sites for Circuit City Stores Inc., Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. all listed the consoles as being sold out Tuesday.
If you are lucky enough to encounter an Xbox 360 system you want the more expensive $400 version because it has a 20 GB detachable hard drive and can also play older Xbox games. The Xbox 360 Core System, which retails for $300, only plays the new Xbox 360 games and does not have the detachable hard drive. MSNBC.com reported that some consumers were upset when they found only the "Core" version of the system was available:
A crowd of gamers at a Best Buy in Manhattan clapped and cheered when the first purchases were made just after midnight Tuesday, but shortages dampened the mood even there. 19-year-old Peter Gonzalez, the first in line, said he felt "amazing," and that his nearly 30-hour wait was worth it. The college student planned to stay up all night playing games before heading to classes in the morning.

But 90 of the 200 people in line at the store were disappointed to learn they had to buy the $300 "Core" system because the more expensive model was sold out. "It's like buying a car without the engine," said Eddie Buist, 29, from the Bronx.
Most stores are now sold out of both versions. If you are desperate you can try eBay where prices have soared over $1,000. One Xbox 360 sold for over $10,000 according to this post on TradersTrade.com.

    Waiting For the New Xbox

For those that like to think about these sorts of things in August, we feel compelled to give gift-givers the heads-up on what is sure to be the hottest gift this Christmas: the eagerly-awaited new Xbox video game console from Microsoft. The new Xbox will come in various versions: you can get the fully loaded version, with a hard drive, wireless controller and lots of other goodies. The less expensive version has fewer bells and whistles. The premium Xbox 360 console will retail for $399.99 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, which is nearly three times the price of the current system. The scaled-back version, called "Xbox 360 Core System," will retail for $299.99. MSNBC reports:
Various accessories, like a 20-gigabyte detachable hard drive and wireless controller that will come standard with the premium version, will be sold separately and can be added to the less expensive "core" console.

Other features that can be added to that console include a wireless controller and TV remote, a headset for the Xbox Live online service, and an Ethernet cable for high-speed Internet connections. Microsoft said it remains on target to ship the new Xbox to stores in North America, Europe and Japan this holiday season, ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3, which is slated to replace the market-leading PlayStation 2 sometime next spring.

Robbie Bach, senior vice president for Microsoft’s home and entertainment division, said the company is breaking new ground by offering consumers a choice. "Historically, there’s been one price point and one configuration. You got it whether you wanted it or not," Bach said.
It's certainly a lot more expensive than the current Xbox, which retails for around $150.00. But the new version supports high-definition visuals. It also plays movies and music. It's the high-end gift of choice for serious gamers and for newbies with a big budget. You can learn all about the new Xbox 360 here. But be warned, the site is a really annoying Flash extravaganza with music (you know how we hate that.) If you don't suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder now, you will after you visit this site. Don't say we didn't warn you.

But we still can't wait for the new Xbox!

    Gizmondo: Do-it-all Tech Device

The Gizmondo, a new handheld gaming device from Tiger Telematics, is popular in the UK and Europe, where it is already available in stores for $440. The U.S. will not see the device until late May. The Gizmondo has multiple uses. It contains a digital camera, music player, movie player, GPS, Bluetooth technology, messaging software and game player. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) from Sony also offers many of these features but not the Bluetooth, camera or GPS. We reported earlier that PSPs have been flying off shelves in the U.S. Gizmondo could do the same thing when it arrives in the U.S. later this year. However, it may need better reviews then the one Gizmondo received from The Register:
The Gizmondo is a work in progress, and feels like it was pushed onto the High Street before it was ready. The body of the device looks good but nothing works properly besides the games, and even those were partly to blame for the device 'crashing' more a dozen times during the test.

Summer 2005: Mega Films, Cool Toys and Portable Games

The Spring/Summer 2005 issue of Toy Wishes contains a Hot Dozen list which spotlights its picks for hottest toys of the season. This is a big summer for blockbuster movies so it is no surprise that the list contains toys like the Batman Begins Deluxe Batmobile, Fantastic Four Electronic "Thing" Hands and Feet, Star Wars Lightsaber Battle Game and the Trivial Pursuit DVD Star Wars Saga Edition Game. The list also includes the two new portable game systems: Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. Other toys in the Hot Dozen include the American Idol Barbie and American Idol Show Stage Playset, Fly Wheels and EA Sports TV Games. And finally for summer fun there is the Bounce 'Round Wet 'n Dry Slide, Spokey Dokes and Flash Flood Super Soaker. Spokey Dokes are bike accessories that snap on and add lights and sounds to your bike to give it an electronic appeal. Kids won't be able to resist the Flash Flood Super Soaker (pictured on right), which uses CPS Technology. Toy Wishes says, "That stands for Constant Pressure System, and it means that you can shoot a steady stream of water just by pulling the trigger -- so your last drop of water is as powerful as your first. Or pull the Flash Flood lever and empty the tank on your opponent in one huge soaking flood. You've just kicked your water wars up a notch."

    PSP Flying Off Shelves

Sony's new PlayStation Portable appears to be a big hit -- already flying off the shelves of stores in Chicago and San Francisco. Sony Corp. said it made 1 million copies of the portable game system available for its North American launch yesterday. Many people camped out so they could be first in line to buy the PSP. The PSP is made for gaming, but it also shows digital photos and plays music and video -- PlayStation is hoping to expand from gaming into other media with the new device. The Associated Press said the PSP Value Pack that went on sale includes "extras like a memory card, carrying case and a copy of the full-length movie Spider-Man 2 on the system's proprietary, 1.8-gigabyte media discs." Sony has a recommended retail price of of $249.99 for the PSP but SFGate.com reports that some eBay auction listings are already running as high as $350. GamersGame.com has more about the new portable game player.

    Designers Show Off PSP Accessories

To celebrate the launch of PlayStation Portable (PSP) a crowd of celebrities and fashionistas attended a special fashion show where designers such as Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons, who designed a pure gold case with seven carats of yellow and black diamonds encrusted on the front and back (pictured on right), debuted their one-of a kind PSP accessories. PSP is a new handheld entertainment system that allows users to play games, video clips and music. The PSP comes with a 4.3 inch wide screen and a high-resolution TFT display. PSP also adopts a newly developed compact 1.8GB optical disc, Universal Media Disc (UMDTM ), as its storage medium. The Associated Press reported on some of the celebrity comments overheard at the PSP fashion show. Haylie Duff said, "Well, they're totally different than the other ones. They're tiny and the screen is amazing." Her sister Hilary added, "It's really a big screen, and that's kind of cool ... and you can watch movies on it, which is really cool." The accessories market has been huge for Apple's iPods, so PlayStation is hoping to develop a similar market for its PSP portable.

    Game Sales Soar in November

The winners of Spike TV's 2004 Video Game Awards have been announced. Spike TV said that over 4.6 million gamers and TV viewers logged on to cast their votes for their favorite games -- another indicator of the growing popularity of gaming. Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was the big winner of the second annual awards and took home four awards. Burnout 3: Takedown (Electronic Arts) won the Viewers Choice award for Most Addictive Game. It is not surprising games like Halo 2 and Grand Theft Auto received awards. These two hot games alone were responsible for helping drive November game sales up 11% over last year's numbers. Reuters has reported that Halo 2 sold 3.3 million copies in November and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sold about 1.5 million copies. Blizzard Entertainment also reported that its massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft, sold to 240,000 customers on its first day of sale on November, 23rd. The popularity of online gaming is clearly growing rapidly as well.
