First Zoolander 2 Teaser Trailer Takes Us Deep Inside Derek's Mind

Posted on August 3, 2015

You know how obsessed we are with Zoolander around here. It's one of our favorite movies of all time. So imagine our joy that that the first teaser trailer is out -- and it's hilarious. The teaser is running in theaters before Mission Impossible, and audiences at first thought that it was some kind of documentary about Stephen Hawking. But by the end it's clear, this is all about Derek Zoolander and his amazing mind.

Hawking's mechanical voice does the voiceover which sounds like an intro for Cosmos. While beautiful graphics of the Big Bang play in the background, the voice traces the evolution of the universe, from the Big Bang to planets and stars forming to the formation of the human brain - "the pinnacle of evolution." The graphics zoom inside a human brain where we see synapses and neurons and some of the thoughts of the human mind.

Now this is where it gets really funny. The things in this human's mind are kind of...off. There are two key equations. First is 3 + 4 = 34. And second is Einstein's famous equation, E=mc Hammer. Wait, whose mind are we inside? But there's more. A blow dryer, a no left turn sign, an orange mocha frappucino, a merman and the word "Buk" on the cover of a book. Yes, we have gone where no one has gone before: inside Derek Zoolander's (Ben Stiller) mind.

Derek, while putting on his best Blue Steel pose, shares the philosophical question that has been bothering him: "If God exists, then why did he make ugly people?" The narrator is less than impressed with Derek.

Zoolander 2 also stars Owen Wilson as Derek's arch-rival, impossibly blond male model Hansel. Christine Taylor, Kristen Wiig, Penelope Cruz, Olivia Munn and Justin Bieber co-star. But the best news is that Will Ferrell is returning as the legendary fashion designer Mugatu. We do hope his assistant remembers what having foam on a latte does to him, and this time gets his order right. Justin Theroux wrote the screenplay.

In March, Ben and Owen walked the catwalk during the actual Maison Valentino Autumn/Winter 2015 show and brought down the house with their appearance in character as Derek and Hansel. They wore custom designed outfits and nailed their poses.
