Elton John Calls for Boycott of Dolce and Gabbana Over IVF Comments

Posted on March 15, 2015

Sir Elton John has called for a boycott of Dolce & Gabbana after a recent interview appeared in which the two gay designers expressed their antipathy for gay marriage, gay adoption and in vitro fertilization for anyone, gay or straight.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are both gay, and were partners for 23 years. They split up as a couple in 2005, but have remained good friends and close business partners. Dolce is a practicing Catholic who has always maintained opposition to gay marriage. He has also said that he opposes two gay parents raising a child.

In a new interview in the Italian language magazine Panorama, the two were discussing their latest collection which is focused on the family. Well, apparently, what they mean by family is actually a pretty narrow definition.

In the interview Dolce said, "The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offspring and rented uterus: life has a natural flow; there are things that should not be changed." He refers to children born of in vitro fertilization as "children of chemistry, synthetic children." He added, "I am gay, I cannot have a child. I guess you cannot have everything in life."

Gabbana told the interviewer, "The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging." They also discusses how the act of procreation must be an act of love and expressed opposition to any means of procreation which uses scientific or what they call artificial methods. This is the mainstream position of the Catholic Church and of Pope Francis.

Needless to say, this has not gone over well. Sir Elton John, who has two little boys with his husband David Furnish, posted a photo of the duo on his instagram page saying, "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana"

Other celebs have joined in chastising the designing duo. Ricky Martin tweeted, "@dolcegabbana ur voices R 2powerfull 2B spreading so much h8 http://bit.ly/1CiY63B Wake up,Its 2015 Luv urselves guys #boycottdolcegabbana." Ryan Murphy tweeted, "These designers horrifying views are never in fashion. Their clothes are as ugly as their hate. #BoycottDolceGabbana." Author Val McDermid tweeted, "Oh bugger, there go my sunglasses... #BoycottDolceGabbana."
