Ellen DeGeneres Inserts Herself Into Matthew McConaughey's Lincoln MKC Commercial

Posted on September 22, 2014

By now you've probably seen at least one of the three commercials Matthew McConaughey show for the new campaign for the Lincoln MKC compact utility/crossover vehicle. The ads were shot in Texas and were directed by Danish film director Nicolas Winding Refn.

The ads feature McConaughey driving the Lincoln in various Texas locales as he voices a monologue. In one ad called "Intro" he muses about how you can go home again. He says that you need to see where you've been so you can see where you're going. In "I Just Liked It" Mcconaughey talks about how he's driven a Lincoln long before anyone paid him to drive one. He says he didn't drive one to be cool or to make a statement, he just liked them. The third ad is called "Bull." In this one he goes almost full Rust Cohl from True Detective. He's stopped on a remote highway with a giant longhorn bull staring him down in the middle of the road. He doesn't must on the fact that life is a flat circle or anything, but he definitely gets his existential vibe on. He eventually decides to go "the long way" and avoid the bull entirely.

Today Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she was in that commercial and was cut out by the ad agency. Ellen reveals what she says is the original cut of "The Bull" -- and it's hilarious. Ellen is sitting in the back seat of the SUV eating some brownies that appear to have been enhanced in ways that are legal in California, but certainly are not in Texas. She gets happier and happier and makes terrible puns about how to resolve the bull situation. She gives Matthew lots of suggestions, but wants to know what is the deal with his finger gestures.

The spoof is hilarious. Ellen and Matthew on a road trip is just too funny. As for the campaign itself: it's called "Live in Your Moment" and it's a great series of ads. We could happily watch many more hours of Matthew drive around in his nice looking new Lincoln while sharing his philosophy with us. Here is the video:
