CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta Discusses the Duchess of Cambridge's Condition, Hyperemesis Gravidum
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta discusses the condition that landed the Duchess of Cambridge in the hospital, Hyperemesis Gravidum. Catherine is in the hospital in London, with Prince William by her side. Sanjay explained to Piers Morgan what causes the severe morning sickness that is so bad women can't eat or drink at all:
"There's a lot of release of different hormones at the time that someone becomes pregnant, and around eight or nine weeks of the pregnancy is when those hormones become, start affecting the nausea centers, if you will, in the brain.
It's very profound, meaning that you simply can not keep anything down. You try and give someone medication, pills for example to control nausea, and they simply can't keep it down. And that's typically what leads to the hospitalization, they need to get those IV fluids replaced. About 20 percent of these women, who have this condition, need a feeding tube to put in. So again, not typically life-threatening, Piers, but very serious."
Sanjay also talked about mental illness discussions surrounding the
murder-suicide by Jovan Belcher, the Kansas City Chief's linebacker. Take a look:
