Mary-Kate Olsen and Bobo Style

Posted on March 7, 2005

The New York Times has an interesting article in the Style section about the influence Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have had on young adult style. The hot new trend is called "Bobo," which is short for "Bohemian Bourgeois."

Just think rich hippie and you've got the idea. The skirts are full, the sunglasses are huge, the hats are large-brimmed and the accessories are expensive, in the new Bobo look. Huge mufflers and baggy cardigans are key. But the mufflers are cashmere and the cardigans are Marni.

David Wolfe, the creative director of the Doneger Group, told the Times, "The trendiest, coolest people were wearing things like a chiffon skirt with fur boots," he said. "It looked like they had gotten dressed in the dark."

Lauren Stover, author of Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge, says in the article, "It's perfectly fine to look like a bag lady," Ms. Stover said.

So, there you have it: Bobo is booming. Personally, we adore the huge Jackie O sunglasses and have happily gotten rid of all tiny, John Lennon-style sunglasses which are so unflattering. There's nothing like huge, dark sunglasses to make a girl feel like a movie star.
