Stephen Colbert Creates Demand For Saginaw Spirit Items

Posted on December 1, 2006

If you are a fan of the Stephen Colbert Report then you might be familiar with the Saginaw Spirit. The Saginaw Spirit is a Michigan hockey team that named a team mascot after Stephen Colbert after he ran a special segment on his show urging people to vote in an online contest that was asking people to choose a name for a smaller secondary mascot.

Colbert won the contest and the new mascot was named Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle. A Wikipedia entry says that after the new team mascot was named Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle the team won seven straight games.

Colbert has continued to mention the team on his show and merchandise featuring the mascot are a hot item according to a Saginaw News article. The article says hats and jerseys are even being ordered from Ireland and Scotland.

Saginaw Managing Partner Craig M. Goslin told the Saginaw News, "We just sent 25 jerseys to California last week. It's the largest single jersey sale to date. We sent them to a wholesaler out there whose clients want one because the jersey has become hot because of Colbert."

You can find adult Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle t-shirts and Steagle hockey pucks for sale in the Saginaw Spirit Shop. They would make a fun gift for a fan of the Stephen Colbert Report.
