Hurricane Ike Bearing Down on Texas

Satellite photo of Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike is about to make landfall in Texas and it looks like it's going to be absolutely devastating. The storm takes up 40% of the entire Gulf of Mexico and is estimated to cause damage in the tens of billions of dollars. The loss of life could also be widespread: unfortunately, many Galveston residents refused to leave. Houston is facing major power outages, and so does North Texas as the storm's path of destruction moves north. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those in the hurricane's path.

You can find status reports and a helpful list of resource links at ScienceNewsBlog.com. You can see live streaming news from Houston's KHOU here.
