Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds was able to fend off the surprise science fiction hit District 9 to claim the #1 spot. It was Tarantino's best box office performance to date. The heavily promoted film took in an impressive $37 million, which is very good for an R-rate movie. District 9 fell to number #2 but made another $18 million taking its total to $73 million - already well over its low $30 million budget. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra came in third and has now made over $120 million in three weeks. The Time Traveler's Wife came in fourth in its third week with a box office take of $10 million. Julie & Julia made another $9 million to bring its total gross to over $69 million.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince fell to the #8 spot but is only $10 million away from the $300 million mark for the year. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is now in only 700 theatres but it should have enough gas to reach the $400 million mark - the film is just $2 million shy.
Post Grad starring Alexis Bledel from Gilmore Girls did not fare well and made $3.8 million in its opening weekend despite showing in nearly 2,000 theatres. You can see the full weekend chart here.
Horror should dominate next weekend with both Halloween II and The Final Destination opening.
