Bloombergreports that Best Buy is testing having its Geek Squad service fix people's PCs remotely
About two dozen employees work at home rather than providing services in stores or driving to customers' houses, said Derek Krueger, manager of operations for the new remote-support unit. Krueger said he plans to add about 18 more in the next month and may expand the range of services to TV and home-theater support.
"We absolutely anticipate supporting complex remote controls and calibrating televisions," he said yesterday in a phone interview. "As consumers become more comfortable seeing the Internet as a resource for getting services, we'll be there."
The service would obviously require customers to allow Geek Squad employees to remotely access their PCs. Some consumers may not want to do this because of privacy concerns. On the plus side, it could speed things up and consumers would not have to worry about having workers enter their homes. You can see a list of some of the remote services being offered here.
