Though the market seems saturated with patriotic merchandise, consumers are still shopping for flags, clothes, and decorations. According to the findings of a new National Retail Federation (NRF) survey, consumers own more flags (67.9% vs. 63.1%) and more patriotic apparel (53.1% vs. 49.5%) than they did a year ago. One study found that 24.5 million Americans plan to purchase additional patriotic merchandise this month. According to the survey, more than 85 percent of consumers will celebrate July 4th,
with many planning to go to picnics or cookouts (56.9%), watch fireworks (37.8%), and go to a parade (9.5%). Also, nearly one in ten consumers, or 19 million Americans, plan to travel or go on vacation over the Independence Day weekend.
