Technology and fashion are blending together as makers of computers, digital cameras and portable music focus on selling items to women. When major technology companies like Intel start hiring fashion consultants you know things are changing. The New York Timesreports that Mary Alice Stephenson, the former fashion director at Harper's Bazaar, has joined Intel as a fashion consultant.
Tech fashion items include the stylish and popular iPods but also the numerous cases and tools for carrying
digital products from cell phones to computers. And there is also the potentially explosive trend of wearable technology. Stephenson is looking ahead to phone jewelry.
"I would never have worn my phone before," Stephenson told the Times, "But then I started seeing really beautiful straps and chains -- I mean, Bottega, Louis Vuitton -- so when I'm running around across the globe, shooting, producing, I can hang my phone around my neck and it's elegant and chic." A website called Wearable Computing has a good list of links to manufacturers developing wearable tech products. The 3GSM World Congress is also putting together a fashion show called Cool and Connected 2006, which will feature wearable technology.
