XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite radio, announced that it finished the third quarter 2004
with more than 2,500,000 subscribers. XM added more than 415,000 net
new subscribers in the quarter and is on pace to exceed 3,100,000
subscribers by year's end. XM competes with other satellite radio
networks like Sirius, which has also seen rising consumer demand for its service and says it remains on track to achieve one million subscribers by the end of the year. The major selling point for both networks is that they are commercial free. It sounds like people are tired of the endless ads and annoying DJs found on AM/FM stations. The Boston Globe reports that traditional radio is putting up a fight by trying to use Internet radio to hook listeners. But with XM recently signing a deal with Bob Edwards and Sirius signing
Howard Stern satellite radio looks like it has the momentum to continue growing rapidly.
