Manufacturer of Extra Strength Tylenol Lowers Maximum Daily Dosage
McNeil Consumer Healthcare (McNeil), the makers of Tylenol, have announced new dosing instructions for single-ingredient Extra Strength Tylenol sold in the U.S. Here are the revised lower dosing instructions:
take 2 caplets (1,000 mg) every 6 hours while symptoms last
(as opposed to 2 caplets every 4-6 hours)
do not take more than 6 caplets (3,000 mg) in 24 hours, unless directed by a doctor (as opposed to 8 caplets in 24 hours)
McNeil says it will also be lowering the maximum daily dose for regular strength Tylenol and other adult acetaminophen-containing products beginning in 2012. McNeil is lowering the recommended maximum dosage due to concern that too much acetaminophen can cause liver damage. Take a look:
