Amazon.com Says It Is Selling More Ebooks Than Hardcovers
Ebook sales have passed hardcover sales on Amazon.com. The company announced today that over the past three months, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 143 Kindle books. And over the past month, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 180 Kindle books. Amazon.com says this data includes sales of hardcover books where there is no Kindle edition. Free Kindle books were excluded from the data.
Hachette announced on July 6 that James Patterson had sold 1.14 million ebooks to date. Amazon.com says 867,881 of those ebook sales were Kindle books from its ebookstore.
Amazon.com also says five other authors -- Charlaine Harris, Stieg Larsson, Stephenie Meyer, James Patterson, and Nora Roberts -- have each sold more than 500,000 Kindle books.
The data means a lot of people are reading ebooks. It could also mean less people are reading hardcovers, but more data is needed to determine if people are purchasing the ebook version of a book in lieu of a hardcover version.
