Campbell's Launching Line of Lower Calorie Soups

Campbells SoupBloomberg reports that Campbell's is launching a new line of its condensed soups that will have less calories per serving. The Campbell's Light line will launch in September with five soups, including Vegetable Orzo.
The first five Campbell’s Light condensed soups, including Vegetable Orzo, will go on sale in September with 70 to 80 calories per serving, Denise Morrison, president of North America Soups, said yesterday in an interview. Campbell will detail the new line today in a meeting with analysts in Maxton, North Carolina.

Chief Executive Officer Douglas Conant's strategy to cater to health-conscious consumers may help Campbell overcome an unexpected drop in third-quarter U.S. soup sales, said Edgar Roesch, an analyst at Soleil Securities in New York. Camden, New Jersey-based Campbell also is trying to stave off a challenge by General Mills Inc.’s Progresso brand.

"Healthy is still a good way to go in packaged foods," Roesch, who recommends buying Campbell shares, said in a July 13 telephone interview. "With aging baby boomers, the sodium issue is a real one for many people."
People do net less sodium in their diets. Bloomberg says Campbell's already sells soups for sodium conscious. One line is Healthy Request, which contains about half the amount of sodium in its regular condensed coups. They also have a line with 25% less sodium. You can see Campbell's products with less sodium here.
