Apple has announced that customers have downloaded over 1.5 billion applications in just one year from its App Store. Apple says the App Store now has over 65,000 apps. There are over 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.
Apple's Steve Jobs says they have so many Apps in the Apple App Store that it will be difficult for rivals like BlackBerry and the Palm Pre to catch up.
"The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up."
An interesting chart here from 148Apps.biz shows that Apple's Apps cover a wide variety of categories but the most dominant categories are games, entertainment and books. An article here on ReadWriteWeb explains how the Apple App Store got so popular, so quickly.
