Google to Launch Operating System in 2010 Called Chrome OS
CNN reports that Google has jumped into Microsoft's biggest territory - the operating system. Google plans to launch an operating system called Google Chrome OS in 2010. The new OS uses that same name as Google's Chrome browser.
The company says the forthcoming Google Chrome OS will revolutionize how computers operate, putting more emphasis on Web functionality, making computers faster and opening them up to helpful tinkering by outside program developers.
"The operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web," Google said late Tuesday on its official blog. "It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be."
Chrome OS will be available to consumers in the second half of 2010, Google says.
Google has posted a message about Chrome OS here. It's too early to tell what impact Google's operating system will have. It isn't likely to impact Microsoft - which plans to launch Windows 7 in October - much in the short term. Google's plans to launch Chrome OS come not too long after Microsoft launched its new Bing search engine to try and challenge Google's search engine dominance.
