Man Dies on Cruise Ship Hit With Norovirus

Transocean Marco PoloThe dreaded norovirus is back again turning pleasant cruises into unhappy nightmares. The BBC reports that 150 passengers aboard Transocean's Marco Polo have fallen ill with a norovirus. A 74-year-old man reportedly died on the ship but Transocean Tours claims it was unrelated to the norovirus outbreak.
The vomiting bug, norovirus, is thought to have taken hold on the Marco Polo, which is touring the UK and Ireland with 769 passengers and 340 crew.

On Monday, a 74-year-old man, thought to be from Norwich, died on the liner. Operators Transocean Tours said the man's death was unrelated to the virus outbreak, and that the ship had been inspected by local health officials.

In a statement, the firm said 75 people - 54 passengers and 21 crew members - had fallen ill with "an unconfirmed virus".
The statement also read, "In an unrelated incident, a 74-year-old male passenger, with chronic heart and breathing problems, suffered a fatal heart attack on board ship and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him."

Norovirus can spread so quickly it can make things for difficult for a ship's medical staff. If the people handling the food get sick then it becomes likely many people on the cruise are going to get sick as well. Norovirus is generally not fatal, but the Mayo Clinic says norovirus can be serious for infants, older adults and people with underlying disease. Mayo Clinic says the "vomiting and diarrhea can be severely dehydrating and require medical attention."
