American Idol favorite Katharine McPhee is helping Neutrogena Dermatologics launch its new personalized acne regime called Skin iD. Katharine will appear in infomercials and is featured on skiniD.com, the new Web site dedicated to the products. The new line is available only online or by phone, and seems to be competing with the popular ProActiv line of products.
At the site, you can get a free skin evaluation. We took the evaluation: it was fast and it was pretty in-depth, with icky but necessary color photos of each kind of acne, so you can select which kind of breakouts you tend to get.
After the evaluation, you are given a skin care regimen and a list of products you need which you can buy for $39.90, although the site says the products are worth $100. You also get a free travel bag, and access to actual dermatologists to ply with questions, if you register. The site is also full of helpful articles and information about acne.
We really like Neutrogena products in general and find this to be an interesting departure for the company. They products are being sold just like ProActiv -- the infomercial is right on the site and will no doubt run on tv as well. It will be interesting to see what the consumer reaction is.
