Red Lobster to Stop Selling Oysters

Red LobsterRed Lobster will soon remove oysters from its menu. The Orlando Sentinel reports that an oyster processing plant closed last week because of the BP oil spill. This processing plant served Orlando-based Red Lobster restaurants.
Once Red Lobster's current supply runs out, probably in the next couple of weeks, oysters will come off the menu, Darden spokesman Rich Jeffers said Monday. It's uncertain when they'll return.

Jeffers said oysters make up only a small portion of its Red Lobster sales, but he did not provide a percentage.
It isn't clear how the closing of the oyster processing plant will impact Red Lobster's stores nationwide. Many seafood restaurants nationwide will be impacted by oil spill as Gulf fishing ends and more oyster and shrimp processing plants close. The Orlando Sentinel article says some restaurants have switched to East Coast oysters, but these oysters are more expensive.
