12 Million McDonald's Shrek Glasses Recalled Because of Cadmium

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned consumers about Shrek glasses being sold at McDonald's. McDonald's is recalling 12 million of the glasses in a voluntary recall. The painted designs of Shrek characters on the glasses contain cadmium. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the glasses. Cadmium is known to cause cancer. The metal ranks 7th on the CDC's list of the 275 most hazardous substances in the environment.

The Wall Street Journal reports that McDonald's will offer refund information for the $2 glasses next week.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early Friday, warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses. McDonald's said it would post instructions on its website next week regarding refunds.
The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie "Shrek Forever After," were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.

So far there is no explanation as to how the cadmium got on the glasses that were offered to the masses. Children would be most interested in drinking from these Shrek glasses. Hopefully, McDonald's will soon release information explaining exactly where these glasses were manufactured and how cadmium got into the printed designs.
