Another study is out that links tanning bed use to an increase risk of skin cancer. CNN reports that the latest study indicates that tanning beds may result in double or triple the cancer risk. The study found people who spent 50 hours or more in tanning beds were 75% more likely to get melanoma than people who never used them.
But the risk of melanoma was much higher among frequent and long-term indoor tanners. Compared with those who had never touched a tanning bed, people who spent more than 50 hours under the lights were three times more likely to develop melanoma, according to the study, which is the largest of its kind to date. People who frequented tanning salons for more than 10 years or who logged more than 100 sessions were about 2.5 times more likely to develop the cancer.
The study also found the risk of getting melanoma is closely linked to the total number of hours a person spends in a tanning bed. The age a person begins using a tanning bed plays less of a factor. It is a dangerous activity for both teens and adults. CNN says 70,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma in the U.S. in 2009 and over 8,000 people died from melanoma.
