Nintendo Says 3DS Will Be Its Biggest Handheld Product Since 2004
Nintendo expects big things from its the 3DS model it will launch in 2011. The portable handheld player will offer 3D gaming without the need for 3D glasses. Businessweekreports that Nintendo is calling the 3DS its biggest handheld product launch since 2004.
"We have ideas of what we want to bring to the consumer that we can't do with the current" DS model, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said in an interview yesterday. "The Nintendo 3DS for us is our next handheld platform."
The world's biggest maker of video-game machines joins Sony Corp. in embracing the 3-D technology that helped the film "Avatar" break box-office records. The 3DS, going on sale this fiscal year, will compete against Sony's PlayStation Portable and Apple Inc.'s iPad in the market for portable game players.
The Daily Campus reports that some of the alleged 3DS features include a control stick instead of a D-pad, feedback vibration, extended battery life and an accelerometer. Nintendo DS games will be backwards compatible with the 3DS.
Nintendo plans to announce more information about the 3DS at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
