KFC Introduces the Double Down: Features Fried Chicken as the Bun

KFC Double Down

Atkins dieters will love this one. On April 12th, KFC will roll out its new sandwich, called the Double Down. The Double Down has no bread. Instead the bun is made out of fried chicken. Or you can ask them to substitute grilled chicken.

Inside the sandwich are two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel's Sauce. KFC says: "This product is so meaty, there's no room for a bun!"

KFC has been test marketing the Double Down in select locations. The company says that it proved to be so popular with customers that it will be rolled out nationwide.

The KFC Original Recipe Double Down has 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1380 milligrams of sodium. The KFC Grilled Double Down has 460 calories, 23 grams of fat and 1430 milligrams of sodium. Somehow we don't think Jamie Oliver will approve.

CNN reports that the Double Down was not a big hit with fast foodies. The sandwich returned to KFC in 2014.
