Popular Science is one of the first magazines to offer an iPad version.
Bonnier Corp.'s Popular Science magazine has launched its
Popular Science+ tablet edition that runs on Apple's iPad. The publication is using a platform, called Mag+, for the digital tablet vision of its print magazine.
"The key quality of Popular Science+ is that it's truly a magazine, but redesigned and redeveloped in a way that makes it work seamlessly and beautifully on the iPad," says Mark Jannot, editor in chief of Popular Science. "Our goal was to preserve all the qualities that make magazines such a powerful, popular medium—inspired packaging of carefully curated content by a team of expert editors, delivered in a visually dazzling issue with a beginning, middle and end—and at the same time to reinvent it in a way that makes it come to life on the iPad's screen."
Magazines for the iPad look great and both newspaper and magazine publishers are hoping the iPad will help save the struggling print magazine and newspaper industry. However, it is unclear whether many consumers will want to pay for something when they can just browse the magazine's website for free. The Wall Street Journal and Wired also have iPad versions ready - see here and here. Popular Science will be charging $4.99 for each iPad issue of its magazine. The app can be downloaded here.
