PC Worldreports that Sony has cut the price of its PlayStation 2 console to $100, which is $30 less than the current retail price of $130.
Looking to scoop up a PlayStation 2? Starting tomorrow, April 1, Sony will cut the price of its gaming console to $100, down 25 percent from its current price of $130. Today's announcement is the third price cut for the PS2 since Sony's first discount in 2002.
The lower price will be available tomorrow and it's not an April Fool's joke. It's also not the price drop everyone wants from Sony. The price drope everyone wants from Sony is on the PlayStation 3. No word on if or when that will happen yet. One analyst told theWall Street Journal they still expect a PS3 price cut before the holiday shopping season begins.
Sony is still losing money on every PS3 it sells at $399, so a price cut could hurt the games division, analysts say. Yet BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams was among the handful that suggested Tuesday Sony will cut the price of the PS3 by $100 sometime before the start of the 2009 holiday shopping season.
"In our view, this action would have a much greater impact on the interactive entertainment ecosystem than will the PS2 price cut," he noted.
Even if the economy improves the 2009 holiday shopping season is likely to be grim for retailers and manufacturers. It's hard to see Sony not cutting prices.
