Retailers continued to report earnings last week. Here are some highlights:
Barnes & Noble's net income plunged 29% in the fourth quarter. The company has frozen executive pay.
French Connection reported a loss
but the company's womenswear sales are strong.
Shoe Carnival's sales fell 8.3% in the 4th quarter of 2008.
Women's plus-size apparel retailer Charming Shoppes Inc. reported a big loss with sales down 14% but the loss was not as bad as analysts were expecting.
Sales fell at Pacific Sunwear in the fourth quarter. The company reported a Q4 loss of $27.1 million
Wet Seal, Inc. is another retailer with falling sales. Wet Seal stores saw same-store sales fall 8.6% in the 4th quarter and same-store sales plunged 32.1% at its Arden B stores.
DSW posted a $7.5 million loss as sales at the footwear retailer's stores open more than a year dropped over 7%.
Net sales fell 10% for Perry Ellis International Inc., a Miami-based apparel company.
Sales fell over 9% for the Casual Male Retail Group.
Stein Mart lost $71 million in 2008. The company now plans to cut capital expenditures by 50% in 2009.
