February Data Shows PC Sales Climbed While Mac Sales Fell
Sales data from NPD for February indicates that sales of PCs are climbing significantly while sales of Apple's Macs are falling.
Unit sales of Macbook laptops fell 7%, while Windows laptops sales were up 36%.
Mac desktop unit sales fell 36%, while Windows-based desktops dropped only 10%.
NPD analyst Steve Baker says it is the pricing that is hurting Apple's sales during the recession.
NPD analyst Steve Baker said Apple's high-priced products are proving to be a tougher sell as U.S. consumers struggle through a crippling recession.
"I think the issue for them remains pricing in this kind of an environment," he said.
However, Baker noted that "demand is difficult everywhere ... even though Apple unit volumes may be challenged right now, at the end of the day, they're a lot more likely to be profitable than other manufacturers."
Dealerscope says a fall for Apple's Mac sales was anticipated because buyers knew Apple was updating its iMac and Mac mini lines earlier this month.
Maybe the new Mac upgrades will help Apple but iPod sales also slid 16% in February. The NPD analyst might be correct that it is more of a pricing issue with Apple's products in this tough economic climate.
