The Celebrity Cruises' Mercury cruise ship was recently hit with a stomach bug, probably a norovirus, for a second time. CNN reports that the CDC has temporarily grounded the ship with a no-sail recommendation for at least four full days. The cruise recently ended its second sick voyage. On the first voyage 20% of the cruise ship's passengers became ill and on the second trip about 10% became ill from the stomach bug.
VSP personnel inspected the ship after the first outbreak in February, which sickened more than 20 percent of passengers, and made recommendations to prevent further outbreaks. The ship's next sailing was delayed by a day for a full cleaning.
Despite those measures, about 10 percent of passengers on the next sailing became ill with norovirus. About 19 percent of passengers have become ill on the latest sailing, which has prompted Celebrity to cut the cruise short by a day, skipping a stop Monday in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Celebrity Cruises said in a statement.
Celebrity Cruises told CNN guests were given a credit for the shortened trip and a future cruise certificate for 25 percent of the cruise fare paid.
Stomach viruses like the norovirus are very contagious and a cruise ship where people are living close together and eating meals together is unfortunately the perfect place for this type of virus to spread.
