Molly Ringwald appeared at the Academy Awards in the segment honoring director John Hughes. Molly, who starred in such classic films as Sixteen Candles and who now stars in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, looked fab in an amethyst one shoulder gown by Todd Thomas. Todd, who is also a costume designer, designed the avant garde angel wings for the Victoria's Secret fashion show in November.
Molly accessorized her gown with a vintage brass bracelet and pin designed by legendary contemporary artist Alexander Calder. Calder is better known for his paintings and sculptures (which are in major museums around the world) but he made quite a bit of jewelry in the 1930s and 1940s. A necklace similar to the pieces Molly is wearing sold at Christie's this past fall for $254,000. Molly
toldPeople magazine that she was thrilled to wear Calder's jewelry, saying "It's a huge honor to wear his jewelry. I feel very honored." She also said her six year old daughter Mathilda helped pick the gown: she loved the color.
An international traveling exhibit of 90 pieces of jewelry made by Calder was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last year. Here's a closeup of the Calder jewelry pieces Molly wore:
