Whisper May Solve Mystery of Carly Simon's You're So Vain Song

Posted on February 27, 2010

The mystery of Carly Simon's song, "You're So Vain," may have been solved. Previous speculation that Carly Simon was singing about Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger or Kris Kristofferson can at least be ruled out. USA Today reports that Carly Simon whispers "David" when a new version of the song is played backwards. Carly Simon confirmed the whisper on the recording is real in a recent interview.

Now, after guarding the secret for 38 years, the singer is whispering the first name of the man - "David" - about two and a half minutes into a new version of the song, if you listen to it backwards.

Simon, 64, confirmed in an interview with Uncut magazine that the whisper alluded to her former lover. "I'm just going to tell you this," she said. "The answer is on the new version of You're So Vain. There's a little whisper - and it's the answer to the puzzle."

Since Carly Simon did not whisper a last name a little mystery still remains. David Who? Some people think it is music mogul David Geffen. Here is Carly performing her hit song at the 1987 1987 Live From Martha's Vineyard concert. Take a look:
