Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte said they took their inspiration for the fall 2010 ready to wear collection from Mexican border towns. They said the towns had a feel of sleepwalking from living in limbo between two countries. They used quite a bit of Mexican crochet and lace, and embraced floral prints. The goal was a look that was "poetic and ethereal."
The collection was mostly in neutral colors. Cream and beige dominated, with splashes of dusty rose, violet and red. The dresses were patchwork in nature, with bits of lace, crochet and lots of floaty floral chiffon. The sweaters were chunky and embellished. It's definitely a departure for the design duo, which has usually showed a darker edge in designing and has embraced a strong, warrior woman vibe. There were lots and lots of layers: chunky sweaters will be a hot item for fall, as well as embellished leggings.
Most of the designers have been taking note of the awful economy and have been sending very wearable pieces down the runway. Marc Jacobs embraced the trend with his beautiful, very saleable collection. But who exactly is going to wear all these bohemian layers? They can't go to the office. They are out of the price range of most twenty-somethings. Women of a certain age don't wear patchwork, floaty chiffon dresses layered with chunky knits and lace -- unless they are really into the whole boho thing. It will be interesting to see which direction the Mulleavy sisters go next. Take a look:
