New Report Reveals Many Major Household Products Contain Toxic Chemicals, Carcinogens

Dr. Anne Steinemann, a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington got interested in the health effects of all the scented products for cleaning the home, after she began getting a great deal of correspondence from consumers saying their health had been affected.

Steinemann and her team analyzed 25 common scented products used in homes using headspace analysis with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The results are shocking. Every one of the products tested emit toxic chemicals, many of which are listed as known carcinogens by the EPA.

These chemicals damage the brain and lungs and should not be in household products. The chemicals are part of the fragrance of the products and under FDA rules fragrance chemicals do not have to be listed on the labels. The products listed as "organic" or "all natural" were just as full of toxic chemicals as the regular products.

Toxicologist Dr. Tod Bania has treated patients who have suffered damage from long usage of scented products. Dr. Bania says that limited exposure is nothing to be alarmed about. Any one with asthma, allergies or breathing difficulties should avoid scented products.

Dr. Anne Steinemann discusses the hidden hazards in everyday products and indoor environments in this presentation. Take a look:
