Walmart Starts iPhone Sales Sunday

Walmart will begin selling Apple's hot iPhone in 2,500 Walmart stores tomorrow, December 28th. The rumor that an iPhone would be sold by Walmart for $99 turned out to be false. The price for an 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G will be $197.
Wal-Mart said that it would begin selling Apple's iPhone in 2,500 outlets, combining the king of gadget cool, and proprietor of the most sublime retail boutiques on the planet, with Bentonville's grass-roots big-box appeal. There will be no price reduction, as it turns out, in Wal-Mart's iPhone offer, contrary to rumor. But Wal-Mart left itself room to eat its margin on the device, saying it would beat any competitor's price. Will $197 iPhones jump off the shelves with every Pampers run?

That all depends on whether you believe that the folks who direct you to where Huggies are hiding can also show you a thing or two about how to send and receive e-mail on a handheld device.
Reuters says Best Buy currently has the 8-gig iPhone on sale for $189.99 which is a few dollars less than what Walmart plans to start selling it for on Sunday. Reuters also writes, "Wal-Mart also said its stores could match local competitors' advertised prices during a promotional period."

Those wishing the $99 Walmart iPhone rumor had been true might want to check out the refurbished cell phone deals from AT&T. You can get a refurbed 8gb iPhone 3G for $99 from AT&T with a two-year contract. (via Engadget)
