Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta Lead Ceremony Marking Formal End of Iraq War
The war in Iraq officially ended today. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta held a ceremony in Baghdad marking the formal end of the war. Troops will be gone by the end of the year. Panetta acknowledged the high cost of the war, saying, "The cost was high — in blood and treasure for the United States and also for the Iraqi people. But those lives have not been lost in vain."
Diplomats and military leaders were on hand for the ceremony where the United States Forces-Iraq flag was lowered at headquarters.
