Amazon Launches Apple iPhone App

Amazon Mobile iPhone AppAmazon.com recently release an iPhone app called Amazon Mobile. The app allows iPhone users to browse through Amazon.com's products and reviews and even place orders. The Amazon Mobile app also includes a feature that might make Apple and other retailers nervous. The feature called Amazon Remembers lets users take a photograph of a product in an Apple Store - or any other store - and upload it to Amazon. Once uploaded, Amazon.com freelance workers will scour Amazon's database to find a product that matches the uploaded photograph. The New York Times Bits blog explains:
There is, however, one unusual and noteworthy aspect of the app called Amazon Remembers, which Amazon is calling "experimental." The tool lets users take a photograph of any product they see in the real world. The photos are then uploaded to Amazon and turned over to the far-flung freelance workers in Amazon's Mechanical Turk program, who will try to match them with products for sale on Amazon.com. The results will not be instantaneous (between 5 minutes and 24 hours, the company says), but the idea is to entice consumers to buy products from Amazon instead of its offline rivals.
Other retailers are sure to launch similar applications but Amazon may have an advantage because its online store is so large that it can match a lot of products. Apple iPhone apps are programs that work on the Apple iPhone and are sold on Apple iTunes. Apple also recently released a list of the bestselling iPhone Apps which can be seen on the App Store homepage.
